Veronica Fisher (Judy Garland) enters Oberkugen's music shop, looking for work. Although Otto Oberkugen (S. Z. Sakall) is reluctant to take on more staff, she wins a job by persuading a wealthy matron, through her singing and musical expertise, to buy a harp at almost $25 over Oberkugen's list price. Neither she nor Andrew Larkin (Van Johnson), the shop's senior salesman, suspects that they are each other's anonymous pen pal. They bicker constantly at work although becoming increasingly attracted to each other.

Le personnage principal, un homme plutôt fin (joué par Buster Keaton), se marie sur un quiproquo avec une Irlandaise imposante : la femme, voulant accuser à tort le protagoniste d'avoir brisé une vitre, le porte devant l'autel pour réparer les torts et demander justice. L'interlocuteur des deux personnages ne maîtrisant que la langue polonaise, il les marie. Se succèdent alors plusieurs scènes comiques naissant du fossé des mœurs qui sépare le mari de sa belle-famille. Lorsque les frères de la mariée pensent avoir découvert que le personnage principal est un riche héritier, leur attitude change du tout au tout et ils couvrent d'attentions le nouveau membre de la famille. Seulement, après avoir déménagé dans un gigantesque penthouse, il s'avère que le personnage de Buster Keaton ne dispose d'aucune ressource financière. Le film atteint son point culminant dans une sauvage et mouvementée course-poursuite qui se termine par la fuite du jeune marié dans un train à destination de Reno.

The Canfield and McKay families have been feuding for so long, no one remembers the reason the feud started in the first place. A young man (Keaton) has a series of encounters in an amusement area, much like Coney Island, until happening upon a group of men preparing a hot air balloon for launch. The young man assists the group by climbing atop the balloon to afix a pennant, when the balloon mistakenly takes flight with no one aboard but the young man. The young man finally downs the balloon in a wilderness area, where he encounters a young outdoorswoman and proceeds to have a series of misadventures.

A movie theater projectionist and janitor (Buster Keaton) is in love with a beautiful girl (Kathryn McGuire). However, he has a rival, the "local sheik" (Ward Crane). Neither has much money. The projectionist buys a $1 box of chocolates, all he can afford, and changes the price to $4 before giving it and a ring to her. The sheik steals and pawns the girl's father's pocket watch for $4. With the money, he buys a $3 box of chocolates for the girl. When the father notices his watch is missing, the sheik slips the pawn ticket into the projectionist's pocket unnoticed. The projectionist, studying to be a detective, offers to solve the crime, but when the pawn ticket is found, is banished from the girl's home.
