Synopsis
Margaret Wyndham Chase (Sylvia Sidney) wants to run for governor and needs the help of a political boss named Eddie Ace (George Raft) to stand a chance of making it all the way. In an attempt to grease him, she invites him to a dinner where also her other powerful friends will be attending.Actors

We pick up the story when the editor of the New York Chronicle sits on New Year’s Eve 1923 awaiting news on the theft of legandary Mrs. Reginald Thorndyke’s jewellry, a bracelet worth about $50,000. Meanwhile, Tom Gaynor, Captain of the Detective Bureau, finds out that the jewel thief in fact is none other than the notorious Harry ”Heliotrope” Melton. The Heliotrope’s signatory is that he always wears a heliotrope flowers in his jacket lapel. His lover and partner in crime, Flo, is just about to give birth at a hospital, when Harry comes to bring her a bracelet as a gift of love. Detective Gaynor believes that Harry deep down is essentially a nice person, with a lot of goodness inside. Gaynor thinks Harry has been lead to walk the wrong path because of outer circumstances.

While on her way to a dancing job at a resort, Maisie Revere (Ann Sothern) is thrown off the train for not having enough money to pay the fare. She is given a ride to the resort by up-and-coming boxer Terry Dolan (Robert Sterling).
