Edwin L. Marin (February 21, 1899 – May 2, 1951) was an American film director who directed 58 films between 1932 and 1951, working with Anna May Wong, John Wayne, Peter Lorre, George Raft, Bela Lugosi, Judy Garland, Eddie Cantor, and Hoagy Carmichael, among many others.

Marin was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, and died in Los Angeles, California. He was married to actress Ann Morriss.

Biography

Edwin L. Marin débute en 1919 comme premier assistant opérateur et travaillera au long de sa carrière pour la Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Universal Pictures et RKO Pictures. En 1930, il est assistant-réalisateur d'un film, avant d'en réaliser lui-même cinquante-huit entre 1932 et 1951, dont de nombreux westerns, des films musicaux. Il sera aussi le producteur (unique expérience à ce titre) de l'un d'eux en 1943 (Rencontre à Londres, avec Michèle Morgan).

Il a notamment dirigé à plusieurs reprises Randolph Scott (huit films), George Raft (six films), Reginald Owen (six films), Robert Young (cinq films) et Ann Sothern (dans le rôle de Maisie, quatre films) et plus occasionnellement, entre autres, Judy Garland, James Stewart, John Wayne, Maureen O'Sullivan, Rosalind Russell ou encore, pour son premier film comme réalisateur en 1932 (The Death Kiss), Béla Lugosi.

In the town of Red Rock, gun salesman Steve Farrell (Randolph Scott) demonstrates the new Colt .45 repeating pistols to the sheriff who is impressed that the United States government just ordered two thousand of these powerful weapons for the army. The demonstration is interrupted when men arrive to transfer one of the prisoners to another jail. As he's being led away, prisoner Jason Brett (Zachary Scott) grabs the pistols, shoots the sheriff, and escapes, pretending that Farrell was his partner. Convinced that Farrell was involved in the escape, the townspeople arrest the innocent gun salesman. In the coming days, Brett initiates a campaign of robberies and cold blooded murder, with regular guns being no match for his Colt .45 pistols.
