Don Calogero Bertuccione, un parrain de la della mafia italo-americaine, ordonne par l'intermédiaire de son bras droit Don Cefalù, au jeune Salvatore Lo Coco, Sicilien émigré aux États-Unis, de rentrer dans son village natal Castropizzi pour assassiner Don Nicola Manzano dit "Nicky", parce qu'il le soupçonne de jouer double jeu. Salvatore ne veut pas le faire, mais doit obéir pour éviter les représailles sur sa famille. Arrivé en Italie, il cherche quelqu'un qui pourrait le remplacer, mais n'y arrive pas. Après une série de péripéties grotesques, il réussi à rentrer dans la villa de Don Manzano, où il découvre que Don Bertuccione et ses hommes ont déjà été tués.

Le film se déroule à Rome après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Fernando « Nando » Mericoni (Alberto Sordi) a un penchant pour tout ce qui vient des États-Unis, les films (son grand héros est John Wayne), le sport (il porte une casquette aux insignes de Joe Di Maggio), la nourriture (ketchup, pop-corn, chewing-gum) et la langue. Il prétend connaître l'anglais, mais ne parle qu'un vulgaire charabia. Il installe un refroidisseur d'eau dans sa chambre, comme il l'a vu à l'ambassade américaine. Toute sa vie est une parodie risible de la vie américaine. Le but ultime de Nando est d'aller en Amérique. Inspiré par le film de Henry Hathaway, Quatorze heures (1951 ) , il monte sur le plus haut mur du Colisée devant une foule des spectateurs, menaçant de sauter si son visa ne lui est pas accordé par l'ambassade des États-Unis.

Milan, dans les années 1970. Devant la lenteur et le laxisme de la loi face au crime, et en colère contre une institution poussiéreuse et corrompue, le commissaire Giorgio Caneparo, flic rebelle et coriace, use de la manière forte pour que justice soit faite, quitte à avoir des problèmes avec sa hiérarchie. Après s'en être violemment pris à un représentant de la République, venu présenter ses hommages aux policiers milanais et réaffirmer leur devoir de justice et non de vengeance, Caneparo est immédiatement suspendu. Pour le venger, il décide de mener sa propre enquête incognito en s’infiltrant au cœur de la pègre locale qu'il pense être responsable de la mort de son ancien boss. Quand l'heure sera venue, il pourra ainsi faire justice à armes égales avec des tueurs sans limite dirigés par le terrible Padulo.

The young emperor Nero proves himself spoiled, childish and unable to cope with the government of Rome. The domineering mother Agrippina and the wise philosopher Seneca try to make change the personality of the emperor, but nothing can makes Nero is a wise and honorable regent. Agrippina then take advantage of a poetic and theatrical failure of Nero to kill him and take over the government of Rome. Seneca initially supported the woman, but then a double game and Nero warns about the conspiracy. Agrippina, smart, lays the blame on the Christians and of Seneca, who could be sentenced to death. However Nero easily deceived again and proved magnanimous, forgiving all.
