At the beginning of the film, there is a young man who decides to become a soldier to defend Mexico from an incoming invasion by the French army. Two kids take a book from a trash can. They begin to read the story of a poor neighborhood in Mexico City. Raised separately in three villages in La Huasteca (a region in the northeastern Mexico), Lorenzo, from Tamaulipas, is an atheistic bronco; Juan de Dios, from San Luis Potosí, is a parish priest; while Víctor, from Veracruz, is a captain in the army.
