Ismael Rodríguez (October 19, 1917 – August 7, 2004) was an acclaimed Mexican film director.
Rodríguez directed many major stars, including Pedro Infante, Dolores del Río, María Félix, and even Toshiro Mifune, the favorite actor of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, as a Mexican Indian in the film Ánimas Trujano (1961). This film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
Rodríguez's most renowned international film is Tizoc, in which Pedro Infante-who starred alongside Maria Felix -received a Golden Globe nomination for best actor. For this role, Infante won the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the 7th Berlin International Film Festival. Pedro Infante died in a plane crash. on April 15, 1957, before receiving the award.
When Ismael Rodriguez asked Pedro's mother to keep the Silver Bear, she refused to accept it. Instead she told Rodriguez that because He had "made" Pedro Infante, deserved to keep the statue. He humbly did. Rodriguez, not only worked with the best of Mexican and international actors, he made some of the most memorable movies of the time. A brilliant writer/director.

Biography
Ismael Rodríguez Ruelas émigra avec sa famille à Los Angeles à l'âge de neuf ans. Ses deux grands frères, Roberto et Joselito, y inventèrent un procédé de cinéma sonore. En 1931, ceux-ci travaillèrent sur le film Santa d'Antonio Moreno, dans lequel le jeune Ismael put faire une apparition. Après s'être essayé à la prise de son (El Tigre de Yautepec, 1933), au jeu d'acteur (No te engañes corazón, 1937), et au scénario (El Secreto del sacerdote et ¡Ay Jalisco, no te rajes! en 1941), Ismael Rodríguez se lança dans la réalisation en 1942 avec ¡Qué lindo es Michoacán!, mettant en scène Gloria Marin et Arturo Soto Rangel. Il entama ainsi une carrière prolifique, durant laquelle il signa quelques-uns des plus grands succès populaires du cinéma mexicain : les comédies « rancheras » Los tres García et Vuelven los García ; la trilogie de mélodrames urbains Nosotros los pobres, Ustedes los ricos et Pepe El Toro ; les comédies A toda máquina et Qué te ha dado esa mujer avec le duo Infante - Aguilar ; le très technique Los Tres Huastecos, ou encore Los Hermanos Del Hierro qui lui valut une nomination aux Golden Globes.Ismael Rodríguez et ses frères fondèrent la société de production Películas Rodríguez, qui permettra de financier plusieurs de ses films.

The film revolves around a festival of mayordomía in the Mexican Oaxaca state, wich revolves around on something like the idea of "king for a day." When the town celebrates the feast day of its patron saint, the church appoints a layman as mayordomo or steward, an honor that in effect is gained by being able to organize and cover the high costs of most of the saint's local festivities. The post is however very coveted by the locals as it is socially prestigious.

In southern Mexico at the turn of the 20th century, tales are told of cattle and farmers mysteriously disappearing. These events occur at a location called "Hollow Mountain" where a curse is supposed to be residing. The mountain has never been explored and the swamp at its base is said to claim the lives of anyone foolish enough to go to its banks. In spite of these tales and possible perils, American cowboy Jimmy Ryan leads three cowboys into the area in search of lost cattle. When they arrive they find mysterious tracks and believe the curse from Hollow Mountain is responsible. Whilst trying to track the curse down one of them falls into a tar pit at the base of the swamp and nearly drowns, but is rescued.
