After the body of murdered woman is found, nude and handcuffed, floating down the Hudson River in New York, a string of murders occur by an unseen serial killer who kills men by handcuffing them before killing them. Mac, a TV talk-show host, and Larry, a police detective, team up to try to find the killer and seek help from Virna, a clairvayant young artist, who draws visions of the murders before they happen. As Mac and Larry try to establish a connection between the victims and the first female victim, who may have been sexually involved all of the male victims, Virna's further visions begin to point to her as the next victim as she unknowingly closes in on the killer's identity.

As summarized in a film publication, Jack Bolton (Seaward) is the genius of the racing stable of Lord Saltash. He falls in love with Maud Brian (Glynne), daughter of Lady Bernard Brian (Lascelles), who is married to the innkeeper Giles Sheppard (Arundell). While Maud knows Jack is in love with her, she is half in love with Lord Saltash (Neilson-Terry) and does not love Jack. However, Lord Saltash's cruelty to her crippled brother Bunny (Key) makes her hesitate. She contemplates marrying Jack to protect her brother. Jack then takes the "hundredth chance" and asks Maud to marry him, hoping her love will come later. After Maud marries Jack, Lord Saltash desires his trainer's new wife and traps her in his castle and tries to compromise her. That same day Saltash's horse named The Hundredth Chance wins a big race and Jack wins a fortune. That day Jack also wins his wife's love after his trust in her despite the apparently damning circumstances created by Lord Saltash. Maud, who had been wife in name only, becomes Jim's wife in fact.

The life of an ordinary family during the London Blitz. In the summer before that explosive September, elderly clerk Mr. Bunting (Edward Rigby) loses his job at the Department store where he's worked for over 40 years. George Bunting is the head of a happy home, with wife Mary (Mabel Constanduros), daughter Julie (Peggy Cummins), and two sons, Chris (Eric Micklewood) and Ernest (Jimmy Hanley). When the Blitz hits London, we observe its effect on the family, and how they cope with the crisis. Mr. Bunting is rehired in his former job due to the shortage of manpower, though little else in his life is positive. Daughter Julie goes to work in a factory. The London blitz destroys everything in sight, and one of his sons, Chris, is killed. In the wake of this destruction, his other son, Ernest is converted from pacifism to the war effort.
