It was a revue film in which an East Berlin housewife is discovered and turned into a singing star by an Italian, much to her husband's disapproval.
The film was very popular at the box office, but drew criticism from East Germany's communist authorities who regarded its style as too close to western commercial cinema.
The film's art direction was by Oskar Pietsch.

The film opens with a creepy Castle in Hollywood and Victor Gaghan an evil scientist creating his clones and chanting the words "S Club, S Club, S Club" and as he says this he is joined by fans awaiting the group as they arrive in Barcelona, Spain for their last show of their tour. After spending the day promoting and performing, the group gets excited about having some time off. Their manager, Alistair however shoots down their joy informing them that they will be leaving for Los Angeles at seven in the morning the next day. At the hotel, S Club ignores Alistair and after they get into their room, Alistair is attacked by the scientist's assistant Susan Sealove.

Dewey Finn is a guitarist and member of the rock band No Vacancy. However, he is unanimously voted out of the band due to his onstage antics. Dewey shares an apartment with his friend Ned Schneebly, a former rocker now substitute teacher, and his bossy girlfriend Patty Di Marco, who threatens to kick him out unless he pays his overdue rent. One day, Dewey answers a phone call from Principal Rosaline Mullins of the prestigious Horace Green prep school, inquiring for Ned about a short-term position as a substitute. Realising the pay would be high, Dewey pretends he is Ned and is hired. Le jeune Martin Hinterkirchner a quitté le village de Himmelsberg pour se rendre à Vienne, où il a obtenu un emploi de répétiteur à l'opéra. C'est une désillusion : le travail n'est qu'un poste d'assistant. Martin doit donc vivre chez l'ancienne chanteuse d’opéra Cäsarina Zwanziger et être son pianiste. Il écrit secrètement, soutenu par le fils de Cäsarina Peter, du schlager qu'il soumet au manager de musique Cobold. Surtout pour la chanson La Serenata qu'il a écrite pour la star schlager Linda Borg, mais elle est d'abord présentée à la manager de Linda, Isolde Fürchtenich, tombe dans la main, qui n'en veut pas. Martin est déçu et pense que Linda est maintenant une personne arrogante. Le grand-père de Martin, Leopold, qui arrive à l'exposition canine à Vienne avec son teckel Seppl, est impressionné par Linda. Quand le jury exclut Seppl au premier tour à cause de son pedigree manquant, c'est Linda qui fait l'éloge du "chien de race".

A singer, Sugar Kane (Linda Evans), is unwittingly being used for publicity stunts for her latest album by her agent (Paul Lynde), for example, faking a skydiving stunt, actually performed by Bonnie (Deborah Walley). Meanwhile, Frankie (Frankie Avalon), (duped into thinking he rescued Sugar Kane), takes up skydiving at Bonnie's prompting; she secretly wants to make her boyfriend Steve (John Ashley) jealous. This, of course, prompts Dee Dee (Annette Funicello) to also try free-falling. Eric Von Zipper (Harvey Lembeck) and his Malibu Rat Pack bikers also show up, with Von Zipper falling madly in love with Sugar Kane. To top all this, Bonehead (Jody McCrea) falls in love with a mermaid (Marta Kristen). Eventually, Von Zipper "puts the snatch" on Sugar Kane. The film takes a The Perils of Pauline-like twist, with the evil South Dakota Slim (Timothy Carey) kidnapping Sugar and tying her to a buzz-saw.

Dan Mulligann (Mark Ruffalo) is a formerly successful record label executive living in New York City who is estranged from his wife Miriam and struggling to keep up with the changing music industry.
