NAM NAADU (English: OUR COUNTRY) is a 1969 Tamil movie starring M.G.R and Jayalalitha. It is a remake of the Telugu hit KATHANAYAKUDU, starring N.T.R. and also Jayalalitha.

After the phenomenal success of ENGA VEETTU PILLAI produced by the legendary producer B.Nagi Reddy, MGR told the former that he wanted to make a film to find out how people would react to his entry into politics. Reddy suggested remaking the Telugu hit, KATHANAYAKUDU, which featured N.T.Rama Rao, released on 27th february 1969 . MGR agreed. NAM NAADU was made!

Synopsis

Dharmalingham (S. V. Ranga Rao), Aalavandar (S. A. Ashokan) and Punniyakodi (K. A. Thangavelu) are three VIPs in a township who have established themselves as noble citizens of the country but in reality are traitors who dare to do any type of crimes for money.

Manimaran (M. G. Ramachandran), is a doctor living in the country of Neidhal Naadu with his sidekick Azhaga (Nagesh). He helps cure the illness of one of the rebels against the dictator (Manohar) of Neidhal Naadu. The ruler's guards arrest the rebels, along with Manimaran for helping them. Manimaran and the rebels are sold as slaves by the ruler to the nearby island called Kanni Theevu (Tamil for Virgin Islands), ruled by Sengappan. Manimaran leads the slaves, and fights for their rights.
