Synopsis
Neds is a dark coming-of-age film that follows the story of John McGill, a young boy growing up in 1970s Glasgow. John is a brilliant student who excels in his studies at school, but his studious nature often comes into conflict with his family's working-class background and gang-riddled neighbourhood. John's mother is a part-time hospital worker and his father is an abusive alcoholic who works as a tool maker. His older brother, Benny, is the leader of a neighbourhood gang called the Young Car-D. On a visit his Auntie Beth, who now lives in New York, encourages John to leave Scotland to pursue opportunities there when he is older.Actors

The story is set in the backdrop of the slums of Pudhupettai in Chennai, as the title suggests, where a high school kid Kokki Kumar (Dhanush) sees his mom dead after he comes back from watching a film. His father, the murderer is also planning to kill his son Kumar. Kumar sensing danger runs away from home. Homeless and with no food Kumar resorts to begging until he is falsely arrested while standing by and watching a commotion on the street. In jail he befriends handymen of a local goon who take Kumar with them and give him petty jobs to do. In a confrontation with goons of another gang Kumar kills the brother of his enemy gang's head Murthy thus earning the respect of his gang and making enemies for himself both within his gang and outside.

The blind masseur Zatoichi is hired by yakuza gang-leader Sukegoro (Eijiro Yanagi) as he thinks that war is inevitable with the rival yakuza Shigezo (Ryuzo Shimada). Zatoichi has a distinguished reputation as a swordsman and Sukegoro thinks he is money well spent. Shigezo responds by hiring a ronin of similar repute, Miki Hirate (Shigeru Amachi).
