Philippe Mars est un quadragénaire rempli de gentillesse dont la rencontre avec Jérôme, un collègue de travail psychotique à la recherche du grand amour, va modifier profondément sa vie. Philippe Abrams is the manager of the postal service (La Poste) in Salon-de-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône, in southern France. He is married to Julie, whose depressive character makes his life miserable. Philippe does everything to get a job at an office on the Mediterranean seaside to make her happy. As this favourable position will be granted to somebody who is disabled, Abrams decides to pretend that he is. However, the management finds out. As punishment, he is banished for two years to Bergues, a town near Dunkirk in northern France. Northern France – and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region in particular – is considered "the sticks" – a cold and rainy place inhabited by unsophisticated ch'tis who speak a strange language (called "ch'ti" in local parlance, and "cheutimi" in the South). He has to spend his first night at Antoine's place, a co-worker of his. Philippe initially dislikes Antoine for his rude behaviour and because he thinks Antoine is gay (he found photographs of Antoine dressed as a woman, but they were taken during a carnival party). However, later in the film, Antoine and Philippe become best friends.

Moltès, a killer in prison, plays the lottery every week and sends the tickets with Reggio, a guard, so that the latter's wife, Pauline, can have them validated. Romain Faubert is a mature man who can never hide his hypochondriasis. Romain's fears are profitable for his doctor Dimitri Zvenka. Even so, Dimitri really wants to cure the patient who has no other friend than him. He feels that Romain's actual problem is his loneliness rather than anything else. He subsequently helps Romain in seeking an appropriate female companion, but after a great many futile attempts, he loses hope that Romain could ever succeed. In need of an alternative, he decides to take Romain with him when he goes to an eastern European refugee camp (refugees speak, in fact, Ukrainian), where Dimitri sometimes works on behalf of a non-profit organisation. He believes the sight of people who are really suffering might bring Romain to his senses. Yet Romain finally finds the love of his life when he gets to know Dimitri's sister who confuses him with Anton Miroslav, a certain freedom fighter. The real Anton Miroslav has stolen Romain's ID and is hiding in the apartment of the hypochondriac.

Michel Boudriau et Kim Houang, deux lieutenants de police, sont amis depuis leur enfance. Michel, naïf et très croyant, est marié et a six enfants. Kim qui a été adopté puis abandonné par des restaurateurs vietnamiens est célibataire et très avare. Les policiers passent des tests d'aptitude. Après des épreuves désastreuses, Kim use de sa séduction pour faire améliorer par l'informaticienne ses notes et celles de Michel. Dans le même temps, en région parisienne se produit une série d’attentats à l’explosif revendiquant une somme de 15 millions d’euros. Le ministre de l’Intérieur enjoint à la directrice de la police Aude Letellier de charger de cette affaire les policiers les mieux notés aux tests d'aptitude : Michel et Kim sont désignés. En rencontrant Aude Letellier, Kim s'éprend de sa secrétaire Angela, qu’il invite aussitôt. Pour conduire Angela, le très économe Kim emprunte une voiture à la police. Il ignore qu’une bombe était placée dans cette voiture en vue d’un prochain attentat. La voiture explose devant le cabinet de la directrice de la police.

The story takes place in Russia in the year 1910. Yegor (Lawrence Tibbett), a dashing (as well as singing) bandit leader meets Princess Vera (Catherine Dale Owen) at a mountain inn. They fall in love, but the relationship is shattered when Yegor kills Vera's brother, Prince Serge, for raping his sister, Nadja, and driving her to suicide. Yegor kidnaps Vera, forcing her to live a life of lowly servitude among the bandits. Vera manages to outwit Yegor, who is captured by soldiers and flogged. Vera begs Yegor's forgiveness. Although still in love with each other, they realize they cannot be together, at least for the time being.
