It was entered into the 1979 Cannes Film Festival. The film was selected as the Yugoslav entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 51st Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.
Synopsis
It shows three friends just before World War II in Dubrovnik - Miho (a Jew), Niko (a Croat) and Toni (an Italian) - who during the war undergo different fates. Toni joins the Ustaše. Miho's family becomes a target of prosecution. Niko's sister marries Toni in despite of her family's wishes. Niko after all joins the partisans.Actors

The film is set between March 1939 and June 1940 in a small fishing port in Cornwall, whose inhabitants have a historic but largely benign rivalry with their counterparts from another port over the water in Brittany whose men fish the same grounds. Legally the French may not fish within three miles of the British coast, and vice versa, and alleged breaches of this rule are the cause of frequent spats between hot-headed Cornish harbour-master Nat Pomeroy (Tom Walls) and Lanec Florrie (Françoise Rosay), an equally redoubtable widow from the Breton port. Beneath all the bluster and posturing however, there is a mutual understanding and respect between the two communities.

In the summer of 1943, after he is taken off combat operations for medical reasons, American SSgt John Patterson (Dean Jagger), an Army Air Force gunner, is billeted in the London home of the Duke of Exmoor (Robert Morley) in London's Grosvenor Square. He is befriended by the Duke and British paratrooper Major David Bruce (Rex Harrison), who has taken leave to contest a parliamentary by-election.

In 1919 Latvia, a detachment of German Freikorps soldiers is stationed in a chateau in the town of Kratovice to fight Bolshevik guerrillas. The chateau is the home of the soldier Konrad de Reval and his sister Sophie de Reval. Sophie is attracted to another soldier, a close friend of Konrad's named Erich von Lhomond. However, the reticent Erich rebuffs her advances. In retaliation, Sophie has trysts with other members of the military troop. Erich is noticeably angered by her behavior. Eventually, Sophie learns that Erich and Konrad are lovers. After this discovery, she joins the leftist guerrillas, whom she had been in contact with previously. Erich's soldiers capture her and her comrades. Sophie asks that Erich execute her himself, and he obliges. In a striking single tracking shot, we see Erich casually shoot Sophie in the head before joining in a photo with the other soldiers. As all board a train, the camera pans back to the corpses of the executed.

Italie, été 1943. Le fascisme s'effondre, Mussolini est destitué, le Royaume change d'alliance et les Allemands envahissent le pays. Début septembre, le gouvernement italien annonce la signature d'un armistice avec les Anglo-américains. C'est pourtant le prélude à de terribles affrontements dans toute la péninsule. Depuis le début de la guerre, la comtesse Luisa, l'épouse d'un homme d'affaires décédé, a quitté Milan pour se réfugier dans sa somptueuse villa des bords du Pô. Auprès d'elle, sont réunis son fils Andrea, son neveu Carlo, dont le père est un dignitaire fasciste, et un vieil ami de la famille, Ferruccio Nascimbene. Les jeunes hommes ont l'air plutôt insouciants. Carlo est toutefois le seul à saisir l'ampleur du drame national. De nombreux sans-abri arrivent des cités bombardées. Le maire du village demande à Andrea d'héberger une famille. Fasciné par la beauté de Lucia, une jeune ouvrière évacuée, ce dernier accepte d'accueillir la totalité des membres du foyer. Plus tard, en l'absence de sa mère retournée à Milan, Andrea va même cacher des soldats italiens déserteurs. Cet acte courageux suscite la sympathie de Carlo, secrètement mêlé à la Résistance, et l'amour de Lucia. Il en va tout autrement pour Ferruccio qui informe d'emblée les occupants allemands. Les soldats fuient dès lors vers la montagne en utilisant un camion dans lequel doivent prendre place Lucia, Carlo et Andrea. Au dernier moment, néanmoins, la venue de la comtesse modifie le comportement d'Andrea qui refuse de suivre ses compagnons. Retenu aux côtés de sa mère, Andrea entend au loin le crépitement des mitraillettes allemandes, signe d'une tragédie irrémédiable.

The widowed Eurasian doctor Han Suyin (Jones) falls in love with the married-but-separated American correspondent Mark Elliott (Holden) in Hong Kong, during the period of China's Civil War in the late 1940s. Although they briefly find happiness together, she is ostracized by the greater Chinese community. After losing her position at the hospital, Suyin and her adopted daughter go to live with a friend while Mark is on an assignment during the Korean War. They write to each other constantly.
