The title of the film refers to the first line of the Australian song "Waltzing Matilda".
Director Jack Lee later said he enjoyed making the film "because it was physical, there was action and I had good actors."

After serving all his working life with the 'South Star' line, exclusively in cargo ships, Albert Ebbs is finally given command (abeit temporarily) of the SS Queen Adelaide, a cruise liner sailing from London to Sydney. An excellent seaman. he finds that he now has many social obligations that he does not have the skills to fulfill. He must preside at the Captain's Table, host cocktail parties, judge beauty contests and dance with the lady passengers. He must also cope with amorous widows, young couples who want him to marry them and a blustering ex-major who claims to have the ear of the Chairman of the shipping line.

Three women of widely differing backgrounds walk out of the gates of London's Holloway Prison together at the end of their respective sentences. Monica Marsden (Mitchell) is a well-bred young woman, led into the world of crime by her smooth-talking but crooked lover David (Terence Morgan); Monica martyred herself by taking the fall for a crime he masterminded. Stella Jarvis (Collins) is a beautiful working-class girl who found her attractive appearance made West End prostitution a source of easy money, and was imprisoned after disregarding numerous cautions for soliciting. Mrs. Quilliam (Harrison) is a kindly elderly widow, who lived in poverty and was jailed for repeat shoplifting offences. The film takes place in Burma and India during World War II. A British officer falls in love with his Japanese instructor at a military language school. They start a romance, but she is regarded as the enemy and is not accepted by his countrymen. Later he is captured by the Japanese army when he is patrolling with a brigadier and an Indian driver in a Japanese-controlled zone. In 1942 Britain is trying hard to hold on to Malta while invasion seems imminent; Italians and Germans are regularly bombing the airfields and towns. Lily Parker (Cheryl Ladd) is a sophisticated American magazine editor who is on a business trip in Europe with her friend Susan Lawson (Ruby Wax).
