The film is based on James Hagan's play of the same name, which was produced on Broadway in 1933. This picture was the play's third film adaptation. The first, 1933 adaptation starred Gary Cooper. The second was The Strawberry Blonde (1941) starring James Cagney, Olivia DeHavilland and Rita Hayworth, and also directed by Walsh. While the plot of the third adaptation is the same as the others, it does have a significant number of changes.
Synopsis
Un dimanche après-midi, Biff Grimes, un dentiste de New York se remémore le bon vieux temps avec son ami Nick, le barbier. Il reçoit un appel d'urgence pour soigner la dent d'Hugo Barnstead, le conseiller municipal. Biff en veut à Hugo, qu'il connait depuis sa jeunesse, mais il accepte de l'aider tout en imaginant sa vengeance. Leur rivalité remonte à des années auparavant, lorsque Biff et Hugo étaient tous deux amoureux de la belle Virginia Brush...Actors

Mac Brewster, de l'agence de publicité Brewster, est nommé président du bal Artistes et Modèles et doit choisir une reine pour la soirée. En échange d'un million de dollars de campagne publicitaire, Mac promet à Alan Townsend, de Townsend Silver, que la reine du bal sera la "Townsend Silver Girl". Mac promet alors à sa petite amie, Paula Sewell, un modèle d'origine modeste, qu'elle aura le titre. Alan de son côté a rencontré Cynthia Wentworth, de Park Avenue, et lui décerne le titre de Townsend Girl. Mac, pendant ce temps, demande Paula en mariage et ils se fiancent. Considérant qu'elle a les capacités pour poser pour Alan, Paula se rend à Miami sous le faux nom de Paula Monterey. Paula fait du charme à Alan, et après avoir dansé ils font ensemble un plongeon dans la piscine à minuit, ce qui pousse Alan à surnommer Paula Cendrillon. On Moonlight Bay centers on the character Marjorie Winfield, a tomboy played by Doris Day. Athanael (Jack Benny), the third trumpet player in the orchestra of a late night radio show sponsored by Paradise Coffee (motto: "It's Heavenly"), falls asleep listening to the announcer, who is doing his best to prove it is "the coffee that makes you sleep." Athanael dreams he is an angel (junior grade) and a trumpeter in the orchestra of Heaven. Due to the praise of his girlfriend Elizabeth (Alexis Smith), the assistant of the deputy chief of the department of small planet management (Guy Kibbee), he is given the mission of destroying planet 339001 (Earth) and its troublesome inhabitants by blowing the "Last Trumpet" at exactly midnight, signaling the end of the world.
