Depuis le décès de sa femme et son licenciement, Ove se sent vieux et terriblement inutile. À longueur de journée, il erre dans sa maison comme une âme en peine. Pour s’occuper, il multiplie les rondes de sécurité dans sa copropriété et harcèle ses voisins pour le moindre manquement au règlement intérieur… À 59 ans, grincheux et dépressif, Ove n’attend plus qu’une seule chose de la vie : la mort ! Il décide donc d’en finir… mais ses tentatives de suicide échouent lamentablement. La situation se corse lorsque de nouveaux voisins emménagent, affreusement sympathiques : Parvaneh, une jeune Iranienne, son mari et leurs charmants enfants. Sans cesse importuné, Ove n’a plus un instant à lui pour se pendre tranquillement.

Max (Per Morberg) is a successful New York-based advertisement photographer, but betrayal from his parents and girlfriend has made him bitter, mean and lonely. Just as he's about to commit suicide his phone rings. It is Peter (Claes Malmberg), Max's old childhood friend whom he hasn't spoken to in over 30 years. He wants Max to come to Sweden and help him film a YouTube-video of his daughter's intellectually disabled friends. Max accepts the offer and goes to Sweden, and from the start it looks like a pretty easy task, but it becomes more complicated than Max could ever imagine.

The action takes place at the beginning of 20th century. Unemployed and homeless Babbs Baberley (Alexander Kalyagin) is being chased by the police who attempt to arrest him for vagrancy. Babbs finds himself in a rich house, where he encounters Charlie and Jackie. Babbs' unsuccessful attempt to disguise himself as a woman gives Charlie and Jackie an idea. Lewis Tater (Jeff Bridges), a 1930s-era aspiring novelist who harbors dreams of becoming the next Zane Grey, decides to leave his family home in Iowa to go to the University of Titan in Nevada so he can soak up the western atmosphere. The story is about two twin brothers, Azriel and Gavriel (both played by Yehuda Barkan). Azriel is a shy and religious Jew who works in a fruit shop in Jaffa.
