It was based on play Major Chandrakant by noted Tamil film director-screenwriter, K. Balachander. The main character roles of this film were played by Ashok Kumar, Raaj Kumar and Feroz Khan. Its lyrics were composed by Majrooh Sultanpuri and the music was given by Chitragupta.
The film was shot at Vauhini Studios, Chennai, was also noted as first big hit of newcomer Feroz Khan, who was noted for his sensitive performance against veterans like Raaj Kumar and Ashok Kumar. At the 13th National Film Awards it won the award for Second Best Feature Film in Hindi It was later remade by K. Balachander himself as Major Chandrakanth (1966), starring J. Jayalalitha and Muthuraman.

Sundaram (Nagesh), a poor man, comes to Madras with aspirations of becoming a film actor. However, he ends up getting a job in a restaurant called Greenlands Hotel as a waiter. While catering for a group of people who go on an excursion to Mahabalipuram, he meets Radha (K. R. Vijaya), the daughter of his restaurateur, Chakravarthy (Major Sundarrajan). He misinterprets her friendly nature as love and falls in love with her. In the meantime, Sundaram happens to meet his friend Raghavan (R. Muthuraman), an influential businessman, in the restaurant. During their subsequent meetings, Sundaram tells Raghavan about his ambition to become an actor as well as about his love for Radha, without mentioning her name. Raghavan genuinely believes that the girl reciprocates Sundaram's feelings and motivates Sundaram to express his love.

On a foggy night, Chandrashekhar (Navin Nischol), who is driving his car at high speed, meets with an accident. He walks to a nearby house to ask for assistance. When nobody answers the door, he enters the house and finds the dead body of a wheelchair-bound man. Standing nearby is a beautiful, young woman, Rani (Zeenat Aman), with a gun. She tells him that the dead man is her husband and she has murdered him. She asks Chandrashekhar to call the police. Intrigued, Chandrashekhar asks Rani to tell her what happened. She tells him that her husband, Thakur Ranjit Singh (Danny Denzongpa), was a cruel man who used to mistreat his family and used to shoot cats and dogs with his gun for amusement (which is why nobody in the house woke up upon hearing the gunshot). On this night, before Chandrashekhar arrived, they had an argument and when her husband threatened to shoot her, she tried to take the gun away from him. In the ensuing struggle, Ranjit got shot.

Sur la montagne se dresse la ferme, le "nid de vautours", dont le propriétaire profite du mariage avec une femme séduisante et beaucoup plus jeune, ainsi que la contrebande, avec laquelle il aimerait un jour acheter la taverne du village. Cependant la femme se sent de plus en plus mal à l'aise d'être utilisé par le gendarme comme un leurre contre son mari et par les passeurs, contre son mari, cependant, pour distraire le gendarme. Elle mobilise donc ses sentiments féminins contre les deux et les incite à régler au couteau. Le mari trouve la mort, le gendarme est arrêté.

The story focuses on the Magrath sisters—Lenny, Meg, and Babe—who reunite at the family home in Hazlehurst, Mississippi after Babe shoots her abusive husband. Guyanese immigrant Ben Jones arrives at Heathrow Airport with a suitcase and a wallet full of money. Immigration officials refuse to believe his naïve explanation that the cash was given by his grandmother, and strip-search him. Humiliated and confused, Ben travels to Brixton in search of an obscure address. A ten-year-old boy, Devon, spots him and offers to help find the address if Ben pays him. When Ben foolishly reveals his fat wallet, Devon runs off with it, and Ben is forced to sleep at the local hostel. Dave King, a charismatic petty crook and lover of Devon's mother Miriam, pretends to be a responsible adult and intercepts Ben's wallet, but he keeps the money knowing that Devon has stolen it. That evening, Dave tries to seduce Miriam but she resists him, explaining that she has recently become pregnant. An argument ensues and Miriam forces Dave to leave.
