The film was the final on-screen appearance of Michael Jeter, who died before it was released, and the film was dedicated to Jeter's memory, and to that of Costner's parents, Bill and Sharon.

Synopsis
The film is set in 1882. "Boss" Spearman (Duvall) is an open range cattleman, who, with hired hands Charley (Costner), Mose (Benrubi) and Button (Luna), is driving a herd cross country. Charley is a former soldier who fought in the Civil War and feels guilty over his past as a killer.Actors

In the beginning of the 21st century, the polar ice caps melted and the sea level rose to cover every continent on Earth. In an alternate history year of 1998, an unspecified apocalyptic event known only as "The Doomwar" erased almost all technology and caused societal collapse, sending the continents back to the Dark Ages. In 1863, First Lieutenant John J. Dunbar is wounded in the American Civil War. Choosing suicide over having his foot amputated, he takes a horse and rides up to and along the Confederate front lines, distracting them in the process. Despite numerous pot shots, the Confederates fail to shoot him off his mount. Whilst they are distracted, the Union army attacks the line, and the battle ends in a Confederate rout. Dunbar survives, and is allowed to recover properly, receives a citation for bravery, and is awarded Cisco, the horse who carried him, as well as his choice of posting. Dunbar requests a transfer to the western frontier so he can see it before it disappears. Dunbar is initially posted at Ft. Hays, a large fort presided over by a mentally ill and suicidal major who despises Dunbar's enthusiasm. Dunbar requests that the major transfer him to a real frontier fort. Just before he takes his life, The major sends him to an abandoned fort, Fort Sedgewick, with Timmons, a mule wagon provisioner. Dunbar finds the fort deserted and in need of repair. Despite the threat of nearby Indian tribes, he elects to stay and man the post himself. He begins rebuilding and restocking the fort and prefers the solitude afforded him, recording many of his observations in his diary.

Cole Trickle is a young racer from Glendale, California, with years of experience in open-wheel racing winning championships in the Indycar Series. Robin of Locksley (Costner), an English nobleman who joined Richard the Lionheart, King of England in the Third Crusade, is imprisoned in Jerusalem along with his comrade Peter. After witnessing an amputation at the hand of the Ayyubid prison guards, Robin escapes, saving the life of a Moor named Azeem (Freeman) in the process, Robin, Peter and Azeem escape through a sewer and climb up into a alley but Peter is shot by an archer while escaping and has Robin swear to protect his sister Marian (Mastrantonio). Peter then grabs a scimitar and attacks an Ayyubid patrol giving Robin and Azeem enough time to to run down a small closed market. Azeem then grabs a fruit from one of the market stands and gives half of it to Robin and after nearly being spotted by a Ayyubid soldier and with the whole town on a lookout for them Robin and Azeem escape. Robin returns to England with Azeem, who has vowed to accompany him until the debt of saving his life is repaid.

A teenage Wyatt Earp lives on the family farm. His older brothers, Virgil and James, are away at war serving with the Union Army. Wyatt dreams of war, and packs some belongings, bids his younger brothers & sisters goodbye, and attempts to run away, intending to lie about his age and join the Union Army. He doesn't make it off the farm before his father catches him and forces him to return home. A short while later, both brothers return home at the war's end, with James gravely wounded. Shortly afterwards, the family moves west. It is during this move that Wyatt first sees a man killed, shot during a gunfight. He gets sick at the sight, and vomits.
