Synopsis
Sicily, 1943, before the Allied assault in July. A pair of American commandos parachute inside the island for a secret mission. They are asked to check on the German weapons and positions before the assault. Along the way, they meet a wounded Italian prisoner of war. He agrees to help them complete their mission, provided there are no bumps in the road and no Germans thrown in.Actors

Michele Abbagnano (Nino Manfredi) ekes out a living by abusively selling coffee, hot milk and cappuccino on the night trains running between Naples and Vallo della Lucania; each night, his goods held in a set of vacuum flasks which he carries in a basket along with handfuls of sugar packets he steals from railway cafés, he moves from carriage to carriage peddling warm drinks to the dazed, sleepy passengers.

During World War II, the people of Naples are forced to work in slave camps by the occupying Germans. They grow tired of the oppression, and revolt against the invaders, armed with any weapon they can find. The revolt lasts four days, and they eventually drive the Germans from the city before the arrival of allied troops, advancing from the Salerno beach head.

Rome, 8 septembre 1943 : Danilo, étudiant à l'université, échappe à l'enrôlement pendant que son ami Michele, un jeune comptable craintif, qui était déjà dans un train en direction du Nord avec d'autres employés de son ministère, parvient à retourner à Rome, où il a laissé sa fiancée Ida. Vaincu par la peur, toutefois, il se joint à Danilo pour chercher à dépasser la Ligne gothique. Par hasard, ils font la connaissance de Gino (Tomás Milián), qui se joint à eux quand le tramway des Châteaux sur lequel ils voyagent est arrêté par les Allemands. Tous les trois se réfugient dans une cave où se cache un groupe de soldats déserteurs, commandés par Orlando (Renato Salvatori). Ils sont ensuite rejoints par le partisan Edoardo (Romolo Valli), qui leur donne la charge de faire sauter un pont utilisé pour ravitailler les troupes allemandes. Le groupe se procure l'explosif nécessaire au sabotage mais se disperse en apprenant la capture d'Edoardo par les Allemands. Danilo, Michele et Gino retournent à Rome, où ils apprennent la mort d'Edoardo, qui a confié à ses camarades le soin d'accomplir le sabotage. Profondément mûris, les trois jeunes protagonistes décident de mener à terme la mission : ayant rejoint Orlando, ils réussiront à faire sauter le pont. Dans l'opération, Michele perdra la vie, rachetant par un geste de véritable héros une vie vécue dans la terreur.

En Italie, après la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, deux architectes, Marco et Paola font connaissance. Paola est séduite par les idées progressistes de Marco et y adhère. The film opens with long, beautiful shots of ancient European art and sculptures being blown to pieces amidst the sounds of war and dissonant screams; a lone narrator begins his tale of "eight American soldiers" as the scene abruptly flashes back to a few weeks beforehand. Prior to the Battle of the Bulge, a ragtag squad of American soldiers (strongly implied to be some sort of convalescent or disciplinary outfit), led by one-eyed Major Falconer (Burt Lancaster) and including Sgt. Rossi (Peter Falk), art expert Captain Beckman (Patrick O'Neal), and the highly intelligent narrator and sole African- American, Pvt. Allistair Benjamin (Al Freeman, Jr.), takes shelter in an ancient Belgian castle, the Maldorais, containing many priceless and irreplaceable art treasures. Although Falconer begins an affair with the young and beautiful Countess, he is surprised to find the Count (Jean-Pierre Aumont) encouraging him; in fact, the impotent nobleman hopes the Major will impregnate the Countess so that his line may continue. Meanwhile, Beckman begins to butt heads with Falconer over both the value of the art (in the context of either saving or destroying it in the event of a German assault) as well as Beckman's own unrequited attraction to the Countess, who seems to symbolize the beauty and majesty of the European art he studied before the war. The enlisted men seek their own pleasures in the brothel of the nearby town, the psychedelic "Red Queen" run by a mystical madam, whilst Beckman marvels at the castle's artworks, many of which are stored beneath the castle for safekeeping. Sgt. Rossi, a baker before the war, falls in love with a baker's widow and decides to go AWOL, resuming his pre-war life; another soldier falls in love with a Volkswagen Beetle; his affection for the foreign vehicle borders on paraphilia and becomes a long running and anachronistic gag throughout the entire movie.
