The film, directed by Martin Šulík, won Special Award of the Jury at the International Filmfestival Mannheim-Heidelberg in Baden-Württemberg, Germany as the Best Film in 1997. The film was selected as the Slovak entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 70th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.
Synopsis
After being kicked out of boarding school sixteen-year-old Terezka goes on a fantasy-filled surrealistic journey to find her estranged mother. Along her way to Bratislava she comes in contact with a mystical and strange cast of characters.Actors

Jakub is a daydreamer in his early 30s and is still living with his father. The father is tired of Jakub's idleness and throws him out of the flat. He tells Jakub to sell the old garden of his grandfather and to buy his own flat. Jakub retires into the neglected garden and retreats into the worn garden house from the world and from his problems. The garden turns out to be a magical place full of surprises and mysteries. Jakub stumbles across his grandfather’s journal which is written in reverse script. He finds a map leading him to an old bottle of slivovice hidden years ago. Now curious Jakub must solve the mysteries of his grandfather’s garden. He meets Helena, a young girl Jakub’s grandfather taught to also write backwards. Strange things happen in the garden, and some of them do indeed seem like miracles. Amid the eccentric events, young Helena teaches Jakub to appreciate the delicate mysteries of life. In the end Jakub loses all his possessions but finds his peace.

Adam, 14 ans, vit dans un campement tsigane dans l’est de la Slovaquie. Lorsque son père meurt dans un mystérieux accident, sa mère se remarie avec l’oncle Zigo. Bien vite, le beau-père s’avère être un véritable tyran, qui force Adam à vivre comme un "vrai Tsigane", c’est-à-dire à prêter la main à ses trafics sordides. Restorer Eva Kamenická (Božidara Turzonovová) arrives to the village to repair frescoes of the heroines of ancient myths for the local castle. In daily life of the village inhabitants Eva soon finds some elements of ancient tragedy, especially in fate of a lonely old lady named Malovcová (Eva Kristínová). The woman, commonly referred to by locals as "Waitress of Change", awaits the return of her husband and son, who had gone to work in America twenty years ago. Eva sees in her a picture of the devoted and patient "Penelope", whose courage and faith impress young restorer. Experience gained while staying in the country turns into her own life decision. Not long after she becomes close with the Secretary of the Municipal Committee, Viktor (Michal Dočolomanský), she decides to leave her daughter Mima (Jana Čeligová) with selfish husband and start a new life.

Jan Dítě has been released from a Czech prison just before the very end of his 15-year sentence and is settling in a town near the border between Czechoslovakia and Germany. He occupies his time with rebuilding a deserted house, and begins to recall his past, where he says that his main wish in life was to be a millionaire. Jan begins his career as a frankfurter vendor at a railroad station, and quickly learns the power of money and the influence it exerts over people.
