Ormakalundayirikkanam (English: Memories and Desires) is a 1995 Malayalam political drama film directed by T. V. Chandran. Starring Mammootty, Master Nithin, Bharath Gopi, Priyambada Ray, Nedumudi Venu, Kukku Parameswaran and Sreenivasan, the film portrays the rise of the Communists to power in 1957 and the infamous Vimochana Samaram (Liberation Struggle) of 1959.

Synopsis

The film is set against the backdrop of the first communist Ministry of Kerala on the eve of its dismissal in 1959 after less than two years in power. A school going teenage, Jayan, grows warm relation with Bhasi, the tailor, who is a staunch Communist Party activist. Jayan's father is a strong sympathiser of Congress party.

Thahasildar Gopi is living a moderate life. He is a well-respected person of the place and has no great difficulty in caring his wife and children. One day a person from Gulf named Johny arrives the place. His ways of making a living in the Gulf is not dealt in detail. But it is assumed that he is not enjoying a very good life there. Because of his wife’s compulsion Thahasildar Gopi decides to meet him with a plan to board for Gulf. There with Johny’s counsel he starts learning typewriting. Later another person named Ismail also arrives from Gulf. From Ismail Gopi understands that people who learned typewriting do not have good job opportunities there because of many reasons including companies started recruiting Arabs as employers instead of foreigners. He in turn suggests Gopi to learn sewing which he thinks will fetch job for the Thahasildar. The Thahasildar arranges some sacks of cements for Isamail in between as a token of thanks. Thahasildar’s wife Padmavathi meanwhile compel him to procure a visa for him from people like Johny and Ismail. While learning sewing at a man’s house he is happened to fall into an illicit relationship with the daughter of the man who teaches him sewing. One night when the father is not at home Gopi happens to come to the house and sways for the sexual advances of the daughter. That night he is caught by the local people mistaking him as a thief while he is running from the house to catch a thief whom he sees just passes by. In the police station he is identified as the Thahasildar and the police sets him free after taking him to the hospital. Now Thahasildar has lost his prestige and good name in the society. Later or on the next day his wife’s brother Sudhan who also arrives from the Gulf tells him the real condition abroad. In his understanding a person who is willing to do almost all kinds of jobs like that of a head load worker's can dream of getting a job in the Gulf. Thahasildar is disappointed to hear this news. Next day he gets a letter telling he is suspended from his job because of a prima facie case against him. As he lost his job now he is forced to become a head load worker to help him and his family just as Sudhan said. In the end Gopi who is now a head load worker accidentally happens to work for Johny who, this time is returning from the Gulf. In this climax scene Gopi is portrayed as a toy which Sudhan gifted to his niece.

The film is about Daniel Thompson, a saxophone player who is a mute witness to many of the historical happenings taking place around in the world. The film traces the life of this character up to his seventy third year and comments upon many things that may have social and political relevance. Dany as he is known, was born on the day of the Dandi Salt March. His wife leaves him on the day the first Communist Government of Kerala loses power. And it is here that he meets Bhargavi Amma, a retired professor, who is also desolate after the death of her daughter and after being totally isolated in life. Dany and Bhargavi Amma develop an intimacy and they travel back together from the hospital. But Dany passes away on the way. Anyhow Bhargavi Amma decides to perform the funeral rites in the Christian manner in the compound of her house, a house of orthodox Hindus. This creates certain problems, but Bhargavi Amma decides to dare all such problems.

Ponthan Mada is based on two short stories, Ponthan Mada and Sheema Thampuran by C. V. Sreeraman. Mohanachandran Nair (Kailash) is a Malayali youth working in Ahmadabad, Gujarat. The film is set in two periods — the first in the political milieu of the 1960s when Kerala was brought under the Presidential rule after the dismissal of the first Communist ministry; the second in 1976 during the Emergency, the time of police excesses and political witch-hunting. Due to constant harassment by the local MLA-cum-landlord, Mangamma (Revathi) and her father (Thilakan) are forced to flee their village on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border. The landlord's son attempts to rape Mangamma's younger sister but unfortunately they both die in a fire that destroys the hut. Mangamma and her father are offered shelter and a job by Nair (Nedumudi Venu), who runs a tea shop with his adopted son Velayudhan. Nair marries Mangamma after her father's death.
