The film Amen. examines the links between the Vatican and Nazi Germany. The central character is Kurt Gerstein (Ulrich Tukur), a Waffen-SS officer employed in the SS Hygiene Institute, designing programs for the purification of water and the destruction of vermin. He is shocked to learn that the process he has developed to eradicate typhus, by using a hydrogen cyanide mixture called Zyklon B, is now being used for killing Jews in extermination camps. Gerstein attempts to notify Pope Pius XII (Marcel Iureş) about the gassings, but is appalled by the lack of response he gets from the Catholic hierarchy. The only person moved is Riccardo Fontana (Mathieu Kassovitz), a young Jesuit priest. Fontana and Gerstein attempt to raise awareness about what is happening to the Jews in Europe but even after Fontana appealing to the pope himself, the Vatican makes only a timid and vague condemnation of Hitler and Nazi Germany.

The film is based on William Shakespeare's Macbeth and with Mumbai underworld as its backdrop. Maqbool (Irrfan Khan) is the right-hand man of Jahangir Khan (alias Abba Ji) (Pankaj Kapoor), a powerful underworld don. Maqbool is grateful and feels a close connection and personal indebtedness to Abba Ji. The movie gains pace with two corrupt police-men (played by Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah) predicting that Maqbool would soon take over the reins of the Mumbai Underworld from Abba Ji. These two thus play a role akin to the three witches in the original play.

Othello, un « noble Maure » tout juste marié à Desdémone, s’apprête à affronter les Turcs, à la tête de la flotte vénitienne. Par chance, les navires turcs ont été détruits par une tempête, et Othello est nommé gouverneur de Chypre. Iago, qui convoitait la place de second d’Othello, échue à Cassio, tient le Maure de Venise pour responsable et décide de se venger de lui. Il commence par évincer Cassio en l’enivrant et en déclenchant une émeute dont il rejète la faute sur le bras droit d’Othello, qui le répudie. Puis il va faire germer la jalousie dans l’esprit de son seigneur, en lui faisant croire que Desdémone le trompe avec Cassio .
