The film was also selected as the Cameroonian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 53rd Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.

L'intrigue se déroule dans un pays imaginaire appelé la République Très Démocratique de Chez Nous. Tout commence le jour où le Président met en oeuvre un programme appelé le « Retour à la Terre des diplômés sans emplois stables » : on distribue aux diplômés sans emplois des parcelles de forêts à exploiter, en leur promettant des subventions. Mais trois ans après, ils n'en ont toujours reçu aucune. Un jeune diplômé devenu chasseur, qui exploite une parcelle avec sa femme en élevant leur bébé, voit sa vie bouleversée quand il reçoit la visite d'un envoyé du gouvernement, qui lui apprend que les parcelles ont été cédées à une multinationale qui va les gérer à sa façon. Le couple reçoit les conseils d'esprits surnaturels qui s'adressent indépendamment au chasseur et à sa femme. Le chasseur se retrouve propulsé sur une étrange planète où des lutins facétieux s'adressent à lui. Le couple décide alors d'émigrer pour échapper à ce système prédateur : ils traversent clandestinement la mer vers le Nord.

Inspired by true events, the plot takes place in 1951 and revolves around Mr. Caulfield, the owner of a coal mine. During Christmas, there are several explosions. An average professional ice hockey defenseman is relegated to the minor leagues because his play is not aggressive enough. In an effort to get back to the majors, he plays dirty and gets into fights on the ice, which gets him back to the major. His aggressive play results in the death of another player as a result of injuries sustained during a game, and results in his being charged with manslaughter. The player appears largely indifferent to the situation, appearing to view it as a normal part of playing top level ice hockey.

Lieutenant Harry Faversham (Beau Bridges) is the latest scion of a prominent military family. A deeply sensitive boy, he is much traumatised by the early death of his kind-hearted mother. Though he never wants to be a soldier, he feels obliged to join the army. Though no coward (as he will later show), he has no interest in an army career. Having met and become engaged to Ethne, he decides to resign his commission. The fact that war in the Sudan is coming is irrelevant to this decision. During their engagement ball on the final day of his army career, Faversham receives telegrammes summoning him and three of his brother officers (Durrance, Willoughby and Trench) back to the regiment prior to being sent to the Sudan. As determined as ever to leave the army, Faversham burns the telegrammes so that he can pretend not to have been summoned back to the regiment before his commission expires. Willoughby sees him burning papers and notices that he is embarrassed to have been taken by surprise in doing so. On later realising that Faversham was burning the telegrammes from the army, Willoughby assumes that Faversham has done so because he is afraid of going to the Sudan. Durrance, Willoughby and Trench then send Faversham three white feathers, betokening cowardice, and turn their backs on him. When Faversham tries to explain to Eithne what has happened, she also reaches the same mistaken conclusion and gives him a fourth white feather. Following his regiment's deployment, Faversham realizes he has made a grave mistake and, having toyed with suicide, finally resolves to redeem his honour.
