The film is written and directed by Pratim D. Gupta, the resident film critic of The Telegraph newspaper in Kolkata and produced by Kaustuv Roy. The music of the film has been scored by Shantanu Moitra. Besides a successful six-week run in Bengal, Paanch Adhyay was selected as the Centerpiece Premiere at the South Asian International Film Festival in New York and in the New Voice in Indian Cinema section at the Mumbai Film Festival. Paanch Adhyay also won the Best Film Award at the prestigious Kalakar Awards.
Synopsis

The wealthy Malhotra family consists of dad, Vikram, his wife, and son, Raj. They would like Raj to get married to their friend, Ishwarchand Mangatram Gore's only U.S. based daughter, Simran. The story starts with narration by Maddy (R. Madhavan) himself. Maddy is the son of a music shop owner (Anupam Kher) who hopes that Maddy will someday take over his shop. Instead, Maddy is a total brat, not serious about studies and notorious in his college. He harasses the girls in his college. In contrast to him is his arch rival Sam (Saif Ali Khan), a model student, with whom Maddy is at constant loggerheads. The enmity goes so far that Maddy even tries to frame Sam. Sam challenged Maddy for one-on-one fight, to which Maddy happily agreed. But the fight was interrupted in between by the professors. Later at Sam's graduation party, Maddy again tries to challenge Sam, but this time, Sam denies. Sam graduates and leaves the college, but promises Maddy that one fine day, he will complete what was started (i.e., the fight).

It is the story of a music lover named Kishore (Prosenjit Chatterjee), he belonged to a poor family. He wanted to learn music from a person named Shankar Maharaj (Soumitra Chatterjee), who stopped teaching music because his students ditched him after learning music and violated his instructions. His daughter Ontora (Rituparna Sengupta) helped Kishore to learn music by employing him as a maid in their house. They fell in love with each other. When Shankar Maharaj, came to know about the fact, he asked Kishore to break this relation as a token of his teaching. After sometime, the student who violated the instruction of Shankar Maharaj released an audio cassette & she hired Kishore as the music teacher. In the felicitation ceremony Shankar Maharaj was terribly humiliated a girl student, that he can't sing & knows nothing about songs. To prove her wrong, he started singing but fell ill in the midst of the song. Then Kishore came & completed the song & gave his required token as a teacher. Kishore & Shankar Maharaj's son become united again.

Monica Gokhale (Dia Mirza) works for Bombay Heritage Society under Khandar Zala (Mahesh Manjrekar). Her plans of revamping the city's old buildings go against Maharaja Hari Holkar (Boman Irani). To stop Gokhale, Holkar has her kidnapped. However, she is rescued by Jolly Maker (Cyrus Broacha), an innocent and not so smart person.
