Add to a movie listPatanga is a 1949 Indian Bollywood film. It was the seventh highest grossing Indian film of 1949. The film was directed by H. S. Rawail for Varma Productions. A duet sung against the back drop of WW2, "Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon" and picturised on actor Gope and lead heroine Nigar Sultana became popular. The playback singers for the song were C. Ramchandra, who also composed the music for the film, and Shamshad Begum. The cast included Nigar Sultana, Shyam, Yakub, Gope, Purnima, Shyama, Randhir, Mohana.

Manish (Deepak Kumar) lives with his brother Anand (Ashok Kumar) an advocate, and sister-in-law Tilottama (Nirupa Roy), in Kashmir. Manish has just returned from abroad having completed his medical degree. Neena (Vimi) has come to Kashmir for her holidays and meets Manish and they fall in love. Manish is waiting to get a job confirmation from one of the hospitals in Bombay. Neena’s sister Sharda (Leela Naidu) lives with her husband Chandrashekhar (Rehman) in Bombay. The two are very uch in love with each other. Being childless Sharda is harassed by her mother-in-law Mrs. Verma (Lalita Pawar). Sharda asks Shekhar to get married again but he refuses. Mrs. Verma's harassment of Sharda turns to tragedy when two relatives Darwazalal (Jeevan) and Shanta (Shashikala) come to live with them. Nina is also staying in the house with her sister. Darwazalal poison's Sharda who while dying makes Nina promise that she will marry Shekhar. After Sharda dies Nina and a distraught Shekhar get married. Shekhar has no interest in Nina as he is still grieving the loss of his beloved wife Sharda.

Rohit, Whiskey, and Kumar (Rajendra Kumar, Rajendra Nath, and Prem Chopra respectively) are childhood friends. While travelling to his estate in the company of Whiskey, Rohit meets with beautiful Neena (Sadhana) and falls in love with her. Nisha lives a very wealthy lifestyle in Neelgaon, India, with her businessman dad, Sardar Roop Singh. She is now of marriageable age, and her dad wants her to marry his friend's son, Sohan, but Nisha dislikes him. While traveling to Darjeeling with a dance troupe, she meets with her dad's business associates' son, Popat Lal, and after a few misadventures, both fall in love with each other. She takes him to meet her dad where he can also finalize his business transaction, but when Roop comes inside, he finds that Popat has disappeared, and in his place is another man claiming to be the real Popat. This is the story of two brothers and a father. The brothers are twins Arun Sharma (played by Rishi Kapoor), and Kewal Sharma (Actor Rajesh Leher look alike of Rishi Kapoor,who also played lead role in film " Subh Din "of Rajeshree Productions ), and the father is Major Hemraj Sharma (Pran), a war veteran who became disabled in the last war, and has to rely on crutches to walk. The Major has a soft corner for Kewal, but shows open disapproval of Arun, thus alienating him. He constantly asks Arun to make sacrifices for Kewal, including giving up his love, Rekha (Zaheera). Heartbroken Arun leaves his father's home and meets an old acquaintance who he had saved from committing suicide, Jyoti (Neetu Singh). Jyoti gets Arun a job at her dad's (Pinchoo Kapoor) Diwan Pratap chand's hotel. Here Arun meets with a hotel waiter who tells him that his mother is still alive. Arun is shocked to note this and asks his mother to accompany him to confront his father.
