Gope (1913–1957) was a Hindi film actor of Indian cinema. Starting his career with a small role in Insaan Ya Shaitaan (1933), directed by Moti Gidwani and produced by Eastern Arts Production, Gope went on to act in over a hundred and forty films in a career spanning twenty-four years from 1933–1957. Several of his films were released following his death. Best known for his comedy roles, he is stated to be one of Hindi cinema's "most popular comedians". His acting in comic roles won him "critical and popular acclaim" and soon became "the leading comedian of his time". His popularity assured him being mentioned in the credit roll of films along with the main cast. He became famous lip-syncing the popular number from Patanga on screen "Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon" (My Beloved Has Gone To Rangoon), playbacked by C. Ramchandra for Gope and by Shamshad Begum for Nigar Sultana.

He formed a popular comic pairing with Yakub, in the "Laurel-and-Hardy" style, making the producers use them in several films. Their most famous films together were Patanga (1949), followed by Bazar (1949), Beqasoor and Sagai (1951)

Biography

Gope married actress Latika on 5 February 1949 under the Civil Marriages Act. Latika had earlier acted in the film Gopinath (1948) opposite Raj Kapoor.

Chiranjeev (Raj Kapoor) lives a wealthy lifestyle along with his father, Kashiram (Raj Mehra), and three siblings: two sisters, one of whom is dumb, and a younger brother. While on a trip, his friend, Mohan (Om Prakash), falls ill due to alcohol, and gets treated at an Ashram. This is where Chiranjeev meets with an employee, Sharada (Meena Kumari), who lives a poor lifestyle with her father, Ram Sharan. Chiranjeev and Sharada fall in love with each other, and he promises to get his father's permission and return to get married to her. On his way home he has an accident, and though he does survive after being treated by tribal people, he returns to the Ashram several days later and is informed that Sharada is now married to a wealthy and much older man. Heart-broken and devastated, Chiranjeev returns home only to get another shock: the male Sharada has married is none other than his very own father. Depressed and deeply frustrated, he takes to alcohol in a big way. Sharada talks him out of this, he repents and on her insistence, marries Chanchal (Shyama), who come from a reputed family background. Things then get complicated when Chanchal finds that her husband and his stepmother had been in love before and may not have got over their feelings for each other.

An elderly lady Rashmi (Kamini Kaushal), starts telling her story to a newly married couple she's giving shelter to as their car has broken down. The story in flashback, is set twenty years earlier. The wealthy landowner, Zamindar Mansingh, is oppressive and demanding of the people in his state. Rashmi and her family have just arrived in Gangapur as guests of Mansingh. Rashmi is captured by the dreaded dacoit Black Bandit. The Bandit releases Rashmi but keeps her jewellery. She notices a mark on the bandit's hand, which is also present on Pratap's hand. Pratap is the oldest son of Mansingh, and Rashmi realises that he's the bandit. Pratap also suffers from a heart problem unknown to the others. It's soon revealed that Pratap is the bandit and his father asks him to leave the house. When Pratap has a heart attack, his father relents and hands over the running of the property to him. Rashmi stays by his side and they get married. The flashback ends with the couple asking about Pratap's fate. Pratap is shown opening the gate of the house, returning from a fishing trip, having managed to survive the doctor's prognosis given twenty years back.

A young doctor returning home from abroad is stranded in a village as his plane develops trouble and crashes. He meets and falls in love with a beautiful local village girl, who happens to be the daughter of his blind host. The romance is not looked upon with favour by the villagers, especially one particular villager who is courting her himself. He hatches a plot to drive the doctor out of the village and in the process defiles the girl's character. The lovers are separated and the doctor, due to a misleading event, believes his sweetheart to be dead and resigns himself to a dejected life and a loveless marriage. The girl, meanwhile, loses her father in a fire, and sets out in search of her separated lover.

Chandra (Dilip Kumar, a young lawyer, lives in a well-to-do joint family with his parents, sister Radhika (Manorama) and sister's husband, Chaman (Gope). Chaman is made to do all the house-hold chores as he lives on the sustenance provided by his wife's family. When Chaman is insulted by his other-in-law, Radhika steps in and walks out of the house with her husband. They start a small business outside the city and soon start doing well. Here Chandra on a visit to his sister meets Roopa (Mumtaz Shanti), who lives a poor lifestyle with her older unemployed brother Moti (Jeevan) and a younger brother Gulab studying in school. To make a living Roopa runs a school. Chandra and Roopa fall in love and are married despite their financial differences. However, the in-laws soon start taunting Roopa about her previous poor state and slowly make her life miserable. Chandra is too weak to stand up to his mother, and to avoid the domestic scene at home takes to drinking and gambling. Matters are set right when Radhika comes for a visit, and after a stern lecture from her, everyone mends their ways and live peacefully.
