Synopsis
The film details the life of Periyar right from a childhood to his marriage to Nagammal to his pilgrimage to Kashi which changed his life where he understands the cruelty of the Hindu Caste System that only Brahmins are welcomed and he was refused meals at choultries which exclusively fed Brahmins forbidding other Hindu castes. Having starved severely, Periyar found no other better way than to enter a choultry disguises himself with the appearance of a Brahmin wearing a thread on his bare chest but it is found out and is disgusted with life in Kashi. Periyar returns and joins his father's business and later becomes the Chairman of the Erode Municipality. Later, which he resigns from this post and joins the freedom struggle. He becomes the President of Congress party of Madras Presidency. Later he quits the Congress party and joins the Justice Party. He goes on to format the DK. His role in the Anti-Hindi agitation and Vaikom struggle. His second marriage and the formation of the DMK. It covers his entire life till death.Actors

Rangan (Nasser) is a very ugly man and therefore lives a tough life. He is kicked out of jobs, ill-treated constantly, and the girl he loves hates him. (Think "The Elephant Man.") Then one day, Rangan goes to the house of his make-up artist friend (Manivannan) and finds a strange mask that he picks up and wears. The mask adheres to his face, and Rangan becomes very handsome. (Think "The Mask"). With the Mask, Rangan generates followers, becomes a film star, and gets a wife who loves him solely for his handsome face (Roja). Nearing the end, Rangan takes off the Mask for a moment, and wishes people would respect him for who he is on the inside. His wife walks in, sees his ugly face, and throws him out, mistaking him for a robber. Rangan's former followers throw him to the side. Deciding that only beauty can bring him respect, Rangan puts the mask back on.

The story opens as Raja's sathyaraj mother requires an major operation to be done. But due to poverty, raja decides to look for an job in ooty. while travelling in train with his mother to ooty, he meets Mr.Devaraj Venniradai Moorthy who is actually an music teacher travelling to island estate - ooty for a 3000 monthly waged job. He carries with him a recommendation letter with contact address. while alighting the suitcases which resembles same of raja and devaraj, interchanges. so mistake raja takes away the suitacase. when reaching their room, he finds the letter and due to the critical situation of his mother, he decides to take the job.

Anjalai, a village woman gets married to a drunkard Manickam, with a hope of changing his behavior post marriage. But Manickam continues drinking and goes to a level where he steals Anjalai's jewels before losing his job. During this time, his mother dies in a fire accident after which he vows not to drink anymore. Meanwhile, Manickam falls sick after damaging his liver as a result of excessive drinking. In order to safeguard his life, Anjalai collects money by begging in the streets and donation from the chief minister of the state. Manickam is sent to the United States for treatment. When the couple return to India after Manickam gets cured, he starts drinking again and gets addicted to it. Unable to tolerate his change in behaviour, Anjalai ends her life. This forces all the women in the village join together to protest against alcohol.

Gopi and Hari, two unemployed graduates, share a room and live together in Madras. While Gopi is looking for a job, Hari aspires to become a music composer in the film industry.
