At an expensive English boarding school for boys, Roddy Berwick (Ivor Novello) is School Captain and star rugby player. He and his best friend Tim (Robin Irvine) start seeing a waitress Mabel (Annette Benson). Out of pique, she tells the headmaster that she is pregnant and that Roddy is the father. In fact it was Tim, who cannot afford to be expelled because he needs to win a scholarship to attend Oxford University. Promising Tim that he will never reveal the truth, Roddy accepts expulsion.

In the Lancashire mill town of Hindle, preparations are being made for the annual summer wakes week holiday. Fanny Hawthorn (Brody) is seen packing her suitcase in preparation for her trip to Blackpool with her friend Mary Hollins (Peggy Carlisle). Meanwhile Allan Jeffcote (Stuart), son of the owner of the mill in which Fanny works, and employed in the offices, has had his own holiday plans disrupted due to his fiancée having to cancel their arrangements at the last minute. After a final day's work, the factory hooter sounds and Fanny and Mary board the excursion train to Blackpool, while Allan and a friend decide to travel there by car.

Lancashire mill-girls Jenny Hawthorne (Chrystall) and Mary Hollins (Ruth Peterson) go on holiday to Blackpool during the annual wakes week in their hometown of Hindle. They run into Alan Jeffcote (Stuart), the son of the owner of the mill in which they work, who has also traveled to Blackpool with a group of friends while his fiancée is detained on business in London. Jenny and Alan hit it off immediately, and he persuades her to leave Blackpool to spend the week with him at Llandudno in North Wales. To cover her tracks, Jenny leaves a postcard with Mary, asking her to send it to her parents (Edmund Gwenn and Sybil Thorndike) later in the week. She and Alan leave their friends and set off for Wales.

Lilly Turner est une jeune fille naïve qui tombe amoureuse d'hommes malhonnêtes. Henri, un vieil homme acariâtre veuf depuis trente ans, est contraint d'accueillir dans son appartement parisien une jeune colocataire, Constance. Celle-ci doit supporter le caractère de son bailleur alors qu'elle souffre déjà de ses échecs dans les études et dans la musique, mais aussi de ses relations difficiles avec son père, vendeur de fruits et légumes sur les marchés d'Orléans, ainsi que de sa vie amoureuse instable. De surcroît, elle éprouve des difficultés à payer son loyer malgré un petit boulot de serveuse. En échange d'une exemption de loyer, Henri l'oblige à séduire son fils Paul, qu'il dédaigne, pour le séparer de sa femme Valérie, que le vieil homme déteste. Constance accepte malgré son embarras et brise effectivement le ménage. Sa mission accomplie, elle fait comprendre à Paul que leur aventure n'aura pas de suite. Ce dernier retrouve sa femme qui lui apprend qu'elle est enceinte, ce qu'elle attendait depuis une décennie, et le couple se reforme. Dans les mois qui suivent, encouragée par Henri, Constance prépare un concours de musique pour entrer dans une école de Londres. Alors qu'elle est en Angleterre, Henri est hospitalisé dans un état grave. Avant qu'il meure, Paul lui présente son petit-fils et Constance lui annonce qu'elle est reçue au concours, mensonge délibéré pour qu'il s'en aille heureux.

With his upscale department store steadily losing money, Gabriel Service, Sr. (Lewis Stone) is forced to discharge some of his employees, including an unenterprising but loyal and long-serving Tim Benton (Lionel Barrymore).
