Au cinéma, il débute dans trois films muets en 1915, 1920 et 1921, avant de tourner régulièrement entre 1931 et 1955. En tout, il participe à cent-cinquante films, ayant notamment comme partenaires Gary Cooper, Bing Crosby, Errol Flynn, les Marx Brothers, Spencer Tracy, John Wayne, Ingrid Bergman, Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn et Barbara Stanwyck. In the late 1870s, chief engineer Gil Harkness (J. Carrol Naish) and construction foreman Jim Vesser (Edmond O'Brien) are surveying a new route for the D&RG through the Royal Gorge in Colorado. Vesser learns that a crew from the competing Cañon City & San Juan Railroad is also in the gorge and confronts former friend Bob Nelson and his unscrupulous boss, McCabe (Sterling Hayden). McCabe shoots Nelson in the back during a fight but he and crony Johnny Buff (Lyle Bettger) blame Vesser, who thinks he accidentally shot Nelson. Linda Prescott (Kasey Rogers), the secretary of D&RG president General William J. Palmer (Dean Jagger), believes that Vesser to be a cowardly killer. An injunction stops work by the D&RG in the gorge and Vesser suggests they run the CC&SJ men "out on a pole." Linda, who is actually Nelson's sister and is spying for McCabe after being told by him that Vesser murdered her brother, angrily accuses him of acting above the law.

Une expédition scientifique américaine composé de 4 scientifiques (3 hommes et une femme) ainsi que d'un journaliste après avoir atterri sur Mars en catastrophe en endommageant leur fusée, découvre que la planète rouge est habitée par une civilisation souterraine extrêmement évolué mais agonisante. Les Martiens sont divisés sur la conduite à tenir vis-à-vis des Terriens, la majorité du conseil dirigeant décide de les aider à réparer leur vaisseau, puis lorsque celui-ci sera prêt de s'en emparer et de s'en servir de modèle pour construite une flotte permettant aux martiens d'envahir la terre. Cependant les Terriens se font des sympathisants parmi les Martiens. Un plan nait qui permettra aux terriens de regagner la Terre en compagnie du chef de l'opposition et de la fille de son bras droit.

In April 1942 in the Philippines, an American motor torpedo boat is destroyed by Japanese planes. The survivors, among them Ensign Chuck Palmer (Tyrone Power), make their way ashore on Cebu.
