Poison Ivy is a 1992 American drama-thriller film and directed by Katt Shea. Andy Ruben (who also produced and or semi- directed the film) transformed Melissa Goddard's story into the screenplay. It stars Drew Barrymore, Sara Gilbert, Tom Skerritt, Cheryl Ladd and Leonardo DiCaprio in a small role. The original music score is composed by David Michael Frank. The film was shot in Los Angeles.

It was nominated for the 1992 Grand Jury prize of Best Film at the Sundance Festival. Sara Gilbert was nominated for Best Supporting Female at the 1993 Independent Spirit Awards. Although it did not fare very well at the box office grossing $1,829,804 with its limited theatrical release to 20 movie theaters, the film received favorable word-of-mouth, and became a success on cable and video in the mid-1990s. As a result the film spawned three sequels that are, by subtitle, Lily, The New Seduction, and The Secret Society.

Synopsis

Sylvie Cooper (Gilbert) is a teenage girl at a private school for the wealthy. She first meets Ivy (Barrymore), a street smart but poor and trashy girl, at a local hangout where Ivy enjoys rope-swinging from a tree. A young boy runs up and says, "Come on! A dog got hit!"

In 1961, eleven-year-old Beverly "Bev" Donfrio (Mika Boorem) is helping her father Leonard Donofrio (James Woods) get their family Christmas tree. Sky reads the contents of the letter aloud to his buddies, and they laugh at her. Bev flees to the bathroom, where she is consoled by a friendly stranger named Ray (Steve Zahn). Ray defends Bev's honor and gets into a fight with Sky. They are chased from the party and joined by Fay and Bobby during their quick exit. The four go to a lookout where Bobby and Fay have sex in the backseat. Bev is overcome by Ray's kindness and also has sex with him. Leonard, who is a police officer, drives up and brings them to the police station, where Bev claims that they only kissed.
