Raja (Karthik) feels stifled under his strict father Col. Chandrasekhar (Jaiganesh) and when his father picks a girl he doesn't like for him to marry, it is the last straw and he runs away to Ooty. There he teams up with Vasu (Goundamani) and they come up with an ill-advised plan to kidnap Indu (Rambha), the daughter of Vishwanathan (Manivannan). Vishwanathan is in fact Col. Chandrasekhar's friend and it is Indu that Raja was supposed to marry. But Vishwanathan now mistakes Vasu to be his friend's son and takes him under his wing while Raja is hired to be his driver.

Palanisamy (Sathyaraj) is an uneducated man who dreams to marry a teacher and lives with his friend Dhandapani (Goundamani). Palanisamy falls in love with Hamsaveni (Sukanya) at first sight. He decides to go to her village Irugur. First reluctant, she finally agrees to marry him, but only under three conditions : to continue to work as a teacher, to live in her hometown and with her father. After the marriage, Palanisamy imposes her three conditions : she must leave her hometown, be a teacher in the city that he has chosen and leave her father. She accepts them and Palanisamy explains the reason of these conditions.

The story begins with a group of government officers who come to list the number of devastated houses. The officers promised them to give a big amount to build their house but in exchange for a little amount to register their name. So the illiterate villagers, who wants to make easy money, demolish their house. The officers turn out to be frauds. The village panchayat president (Vinu Chakravarthy) knows that the villagers will not interfere in his decision until they are uneducated. Sivaraman, a new school teacher, tries to change their custom and the children are happy to learn at school. Soon, Sivaraman has trouble with the village head.

Nambirajan (Sathyaraj) and Visky (Goundamani) are best friends. Both of them are very helpful to MLA Arivudaiyan (Nassar) with all his work. Priya (Ammu), Nambirajan’s sister, loves Rakesh, a rich boy. Nambirajan and Rakesh's father Muthiah Pillai (Rajan P. Dev) prepare their engagement. Amavasai (Sathyaraj),homeless but egoistic, gets acquainted to politician Manimaran, then MLA of palladam constituency, near tirupur (Manivannan). Amavasai helps Mani with some petty tasks during election campaign and meetings. Amavasai grows into a well acclaimed helper and first associate for Mani. Meanwhile Amavasai falls in love with thayamma(Kasthuri) and one day gives her some drug making her groggy and then deflowers her. Mani instructs Amavasai to stand for MLA election as independent candidate in the coming general election with his support as mani was not given his party ticket. Amavasai wins by huge margin and becomes the MLA. He forgets his relationship with Kasthuri and rejects her pregnancy and child. Kasthuri and her parents move out of that village to avoid humiliation. Soon kasthuri gives birth to a boy and dies. Amavasai forgets Mani's help and forces him in role under him. He changes his name to Nagaraja Cholan for gaining social status. He marries the only daughter of the rich local landlord, Sivakami (Sujatha) and even cheats him of his Palace. Over years Amavasai grows into highly influential and corrupt politician with high criminal affluence. He builds a strong political empire through shortcuts. His ego and pride to remain in power make him kill many. He wins and remains as MLA of palladam in all the general elections for next 20 years.

Indu and Chandru (Ramba and Karthik) fall in love. Indu does the disappearing act and Chandru gets engaged to Rekha (Mumtaz). Indu re-appears after three years with a little girl, who she claims is Chandru's daughter. Chandru vehemently denies it and finding Indu's presence an embarrassment tries to ferret out the truth. After many scenes of forced comedy, we learn that the girl is the illegitimate daughter of Chandru's much-married brother, who had seduced Indu's sister. After his brother's futile attempt to play the villain, Chandru latches on to Indu fast enough. And with no apology to Rekha. But it is not really Chandru's fault. For Rekha had done the disappearing act from the scene early enough without any explanation either.
