Synopsis
Début des années 1960. Copains depuis l'âge de 7 ans, Niila et Matti vivent à Pajala, bourgade paumée du nord de la Suède. Il ne s'y passe jamais rien, sauf quelques tensions entre Suédois et Finlandais de souche, la majorité d'entre eux parlant un étrange volapük. Ici, les "vrais hommes" lèvent bien le coude, chassent l'élan et font beaucoup d'enfants qu'ils n'hésitent pas à battre pour leur apprendre le respect de Dieu. Tout change le jour où Niila échange la bible de sa grand-mère contre un 45-tours des Beatles. Avec leur nouveau professeur de musique, lui et Matti décident de monter un groupe de rock... Une tragi-comédie exquise et très rythmée, qui joue sur une multitude de registres : on y trouve à la fois le côté chronique adolescente du Péril jeune de Cédric Klapisch, le psychédélisme d'Emir Kusturica, le laconisme d'Aki Kaurismaki et les doutes d'Ingmar Bergman. L'occasion aussi de revoir la sublime Kati Outinen, qui interprète la mère de Niila.Actors

A church is burning. Firefighters rescues several people from the fire. But left in the Church is Eva (Josefin Nilsson), a blonde girl dressed as the Saint Lucia. One of the firefighters, Adam (Björn Kjellman), returns to the church to save her. They unite in a kiss and the ending credits starts rolling. After the credits are done you hear Adam ask, "Is it over now?". Four years later, Adam is sitting at the breakfast table thinking that the relationship is routine. Everything is predictable. Eva wants a baby and buy a house but Adam is not willing to take responsibility. He is afraid of being a regular Joe as his brother Sven (Reine Brynolfsson). Adam and Eva celebrates midsummer with Sven's family and friends. A lot of people have their kids with them. Åke (Jacob Ericksson) starts singing songs with dirty lyrics. Sven stops him, whereupon Åke goes away in protest to sit down and talk with Eva. At night, Adam meets Sven's and his wife Kicki's (Katrin Sundberg) young nanny Jackie (Dubrilla Ekerlund).

The film is based around the life of Mona Berglund, a mother-of-four obsessed with the Eurovision Song Contest - so much so, that her house is decorated with posters of her idols, and she has named her children after Swedish Eurovision performers: Kikki, Anna Book, Lena PH and Carola. Her partner Bosse is unemployed, and she is left to feed the family. Her brother, Candy, is a transvestite and an AIDS-sufferer who designs clothes. David, Mona's employer, a cerebral palsy-sufferer, is a proficient songwriter however, and composes a song which Mona steals and sends a demo of (with her own lyrics) into Melodifestivalen, the Swedish heats for the Eurovision contest. Much to Mona's delight, the song qualifies for the finals. Mona's new-found fame takes her to unexpected places, including a TV interview, and an invitation to lunch at Berns. Throughout, the film, though, Mona is torn as to whether she should reveal that she was not in fact the only writer of her song, and thus risk losing the public's support.

Henrik Bergman is a student of theology who comes from a poor family. On the other hand, the family of his best friend Ernst Åkerblom is wealthy. Although Henrik is in a relationship with Frida, a waitress, he falls in love with Ernst's sister Anna Åkerblom. Anna's family doesn't consider him fit to join the family, so he stays with Frida. Some years later, Anna's father is deceased, Anna suffers from tuberculosis and Henrik has finished his studies. Now the wedding can take place. Anna follows her husband to a small village in the north of Sweden. Their different characters and his low income cause constant tensions between them. When he turns down a job offer for a prestigious position in Uppsala, the situation exacerbates.

20 years after Magnus Edkvist (Björn Kjellman) graduated from the ninth grade in Hagsätra, he gets an invitation to a class reunion. He declines the invitation, because he doesn't want to relive some of the most embarrassing moments of his life. Magnus rather stays home with his wife Lollo (Cecilia Frode) and his daughter. This film is set in 1943 when the whole of Europe was embroiled in WWII. It deals with attraction of a 15-year-old boy Stig to his teacher Viola. The movie revolves at first around the sexual encounters between Stig and Viola; then, as the plot develops, Stig forms a close friendship with Viola's husband, a hard-drinking salesman who is quite aware of what is going on with his wife and Stig but does nothing to prevent it. Eventually, Viola descends, like her husband, into drink, and after threatening Stig with a broken bottle, their relationship ends.
