Rappeneau était assisté de François Leterrier ; Alain Cavalier a collaboré à la rédaction du scénario, et Maurice Jarre a participé à la réalisation de la bande originale. Ce dernier a d'ailleurs déclaré à propos de ce film : « Je me souviens très bien de l’angoisse de Jean-Paul car c’était son premier film. J’ai toujours gardé un bon souvenir de cette période. »

Having killed a noble too friendly with his wife Charlotte, Nicolas Phillibert flees from France to South Carolina, where he does well and wants to marry a rich man’s daughter. To do so, he will first have to return to France and get a divorce. On landing at Nantes in 1793, the Reign of Terror is raging and he is arrested by the revolutionaries. Taken to a republican ceremony in the cathedral, he saves the life of a royalist girl, Pauline, and escapes with her to an isolated castle. There he finds Charlotte, claiming to be a widow, with Pauline’s brother Henri. A prince arrives from London to organise resistance in the Vendée and is struck by Charlotte, who was told by a gypsy that she would become a princess. She admits that she is married to Nicolas, so the prince has him drugged and carried into Nantes city hall to get a divorce. Put back on his ship for America, Nicolas’ divorce certificate blows overboard. Diving into the Loire, he swims ashore to find Charlotte again, but she has left with the prince for neutral Germany. Pursuing her across France in the throes of the Austrian invasion, he catches her at the frontier. Fifteen years later, Nicolas is made a prince by Napoleon and the gypsy’s prediction comes true.

As airman Adrien Dufourquet embarks on an 8-day leave in Paris to see his fiancée, Agnès, two South American Indians steal an Amazon statuette from a museum and force Professor Catalan, the curator, into their car. Catalan was Agnès' father's companion on an Amazon expedition during which her father died. Catalan believes that the statuette is one of three which hold the secret to an Amazon treasure. Adrien arrives in time to see the Indians abducting Agnès, the only one who knows the location of the other statuettes, and he pursues them to the airport where he steals a ticket and boards the same plane.

César Dandieu est un honnête caissier dans une compagnie pétrolière et Fernand Mouchette un inventeur distrait. Ce dernier vient proposer un nouveau type de carburateur à ladite compagnie quand César doit rendre sa caisse de la journée à son supérieur hiérarchique. Scant days before her wedding to Vittorio, Nelly (Deneuve) has a change of heart and runs away. As Vittorio pursues her through Caracas, she turns for help first to Alex (Roberts), a previous employer, and then to Martin (Montand), a middle-aged French man she meets by chance. Martin drives her to the airport, where she gets a plane ticket to Paris. Returning by boat to his peaceful lonely life on an island off the coast, Martin is surprised and dismayed to find that Nelly has made her way there ahead of him. Cyrano de Bergerac (Gérard Depardieu) is a Parisian poet and swashbuckler with a large nose of which he is self-conscious, but pretends to be proud of. He is madly in love with his "friendly cousin" (they were not actually related as cousins), the beautiful Roxane (Anne Brochet); however, he does not believe she will requite his love because he considers himself physically unattractive, because of his over large nose. Soon, he finds that Roxane has become infatuated with Christian de Neuvillette (Vincent Pérez), a dashing new recruit to the Cadets de Gascogne, the military unit in which Cyrano is serving. Christian however, despite his good looks, is tongue-tied when speaking with women. Seeing an opportunity to vicariously declare his love for Roxane, he decides to aid Christian, who does not know how to court a woman and gain her love.
