Après La Vie de château qui lui vaut un succès d'estime, les films suivants rencontrent l'adhésion du public dans les années 1970 et 1980 : Les Mariés de l'an II en 1971 avec Jean-Paul Belmondo, Marlène Jobert et Laura Antonelli, Le Sauvage en 1975 avec Yves Montand et Catherine Deneuve, Tout feu, tout flamme en 1982 avec Yves Montand et Isabelle Adjani dépassent ainsi chacun les 2 millions d'entrées en France. Puis, en 1990, Jean-Paul Rappeneau réalise l'adaptation de Cyrano de Bergerac d'Edmond Rostand, avec Gérard Depardieu en vedette, film - coécrit avec Jean-Claude Carrière - qui reçoit un énorme succès critique et populaire (plus de 4 millions d'entrées).
En 2017, il préside le jury du 9e Festival international du film policier de Beaune.

Il a commencé sa carrière comme assistant et scénariste de Louis Malle pour Zazie dans le métro en 1960 et Vie privée en 1961. Jérôme Varenne, un homme d'affaires, vit à Shanghai depuis plus de dix ans. Devant se rendre en voyage d'affaire à Londres en compagnie de sa fiancée et associée Chen-Lin, il profite de son passage en Europe pour voir sa famille à Paris. Cyrano de Bergerac (Gérard Depardieu) is a Parisian poet and swashbuckler with a large nose of which he is self-conscious, but pretends to be proud of. He is madly in love with his "friendly cousin" (they were not actually related as cousins), the beautiful Roxane (Anne Brochet); however, he does not believe she will requite his love because he considers himself physically unattractive, because of his over large nose. Soon, he finds that Roxane has become infatuated with Christian de Neuvillette (Vincent Pérez), a dashing new recruit to the Cadets de Gascogne, the military unit in which Cyrano is serving. Christian however, despite his good looks, is tongue-tied when speaking with women. Seeing an opportunity to vicariously declare his love for Roxane, he decides to aid Christian, who does not know how to court a woman and gain her love.

Scant days before her wedding to Vittorio, Nelly (Deneuve) has a change of heart and runs away. Having killed a noble too friendly with his wife Charlotte, Nicolas Phillibert flees from France to South Carolina, where he does well and wants to marry a rich man’s daughter. To do so, he will first have to return to France and get a divorce. On landing at Nantes in 1793, the Reign of Terror is raging and he is arrested by the revolutionaries. Taken to a republican ceremony in the cathedral, he saves the life of a royalist girl, Pauline, and escapes with her to an isolated castle. There he finds Charlotte, claiming to be a widow, with Pauline’s brother Henri. A prince arrives from London to organise resistance in the Vendée and is struck by Charlotte, who was told by a gypsy that she would become a princess. She admits that she is married to Nicolas, so the prince has him drugged and carried into Nantes city hall to get a divorce. Put back on his ship for America, Nicolas’ divorce certificate blows overboard. Diving into the Loire, he swims ashore to find Charlotte again, but she has left with the prince for neutral Germany. Pursuing her across France in the throes of the Austrian invasion, he catches her at the frontier. Fifteen years later, Nicolas is made a prince by Napoleon and the gypsy’s prediction comes true.

As airman Adrien Dufourquet embarks on an 8-day leave in Paris to see his fiancée, Agnès, two South American Indians steal an Amazon statuette from a museum and force Professor Catalan, the curator, into their car. Catalan was Agnès' father's companion on an Amazon expedition during which her father died. Catalan believes that the statuette is one of three which hold the secret to an Amazon treasure.
