Walter et Paola, respectivement présentateur et marraine du sixième Cantagiro (1967), sont coincés par un mensonge : pour écarter une admiratrice, Walter se dit marié à Paola, mais la nouvelle devient publique. L'action se situe en 1870. Le prince russe Vladimir Yariskine est assassiné la veille de ses noces avec la princesse Fedora. Celle-ci, devant le père de la victime, jure de venger son promis. En suivant les traces incertaines du coupable, elle arrive à Paris où elle fait la connaissance d'un compatriote, un peintre nommé Loris (Amedeo Nazzari), et en tombe amoureuse. Il se trouve que c'est l'assassin qu'elle cherche et elle n'hésite pas à le dénoncer à la police russe dans une lettre. La lettre, arrivée en Russie, provoque l'arrestation du frère de Loris, comme complice du crime. Le jeune se noie en prison à la suite d'une inondation du fleuve qui envahit les cellules. La mère des deux meurt de chagrin. Cela amène Fedora à découvrir que le peintre avait été gravement offensé dans son honneur par le prince : c'était l’amant de sa femme, il les avait surpris ensemble. Dans l'échange de coups de feu, Loris était resté blessé et le prince Vladimir avait perdu la vie. Fedora, désespérée, s'ôte la vie avec le poison contenu dans une croix que lui avait offerte son mari la veille des noces. Elle meurt entre les bras du peintre.

Antonio Buonocore, keeper of a stable Rome with a wife German, is to attend the event to Mr. Andrew, an elderly tenant who, before dying, tells him to be in possession of a suitcase inside with a few clichés of the original Bank of Italy, of which he had long been dependent, and the watermarked paper to print the notes 10,000 pounds. Mr. Andrea had stolen this material with the intention of "revenge" of his dismissal and make fake money, but never had the courage to succeed in its intention, therefore, Buonocore asked to throw the bag into the river so destroying the contents. Buonocore, however, is going through a bad time: basically honest person, has refused to become an accomplice of the accountant Casoria, the new administrator of the condominium, which had proposed to make a series of fraudulent transactions against the same building, and for this reason is under threat of dismissal. He thus decides not to destroy the bag, but ignoring the banknote printing techniques, to produce 10,000 pieces is forced to ask the cooperation of the typographer Joseph The Turkish and, later, the painter Cardone, both as variously indebted him. Building on the economic needs of his cronies, organizes meetings of stealth and hilarious night to give life to a gang of counterfeiters. The three manage to print banknotes and "split" in a bar one night, but things get complicated when Buonocore discovers that his eldest son Michael, a brilliant financier in his career recently moved to Rome, is following its own investigation of the delicate creation of a batch of counterfeit notes.

Province of Rome, the early postwar years. Antonio, an unemployed middle-aged, married a rich woman, Teresa, who bullies: he lives in the countryside with his wife and daughter Valeria with the earnest and always without a penny in his pocket. Valeria makes the acquaintance of Albert, a young journalist, came to the country with the purpose of approaching and interviewing the bandit Ignatius said, "The Press", feared throughout the region for its daring enterprises. Valeria and Alberto, now engaged, hatched a plan to rescue Toto, going by Ignatius in his den and calling for freedom of Toto in exchange for an interview that will make the famous bandit. Ignatius accepts and Toto back home. After the wedding of Valeria and Alberto, Teresa's husband out of the house, warning him not to come back until you have made a stand. Toto, who has never worked, is reduced to make the "boy" in the workshop of Peppino.
