The movie is about the relationship between India and Pakistan. The governments of India and Pakistan have launched, "Project Milaap", where both the governments will release the POWs from the previous wars. Raghavan (Sunil Shetty), a deranged ex-army man-turned-militant does not want the peaceful operation to turn to reality and makes an attempt on Gen. Amarjeet Bakshi (Kabir Bedi)'s life. While trying to rescue Gen. Bakshi , Brigadier Shekhar Sharma (Naseeruddin Shah) falls prey to a stray bullet. While on deathbed he confesses to his son Major Ram Prasad Sharma (Shahrukh Khan) that his wife and son had left him many years ago due to his infidelity. He tells Ram his last wish: his family be reunited under one roof, and dies. Meanwhile, Gen. Bakshi tells Ram that his teenage daughter Sanjana's life is in danger, and asks him to go undercover to Darjeeling and pose as a student in Sanjana's class in front of her own eyes. As the fate would have it, Ram learns that his younger brother Laxman "Lucky" (Zayed Khan) is studying at the same college. So Maj. Ram starts off on his dual mission: personal and national. While at the college he falls in love the new chemistry teacher but, keeps making a fool of himself when singing. He meets Sanju (Amrita Rao), who has a very hard time impressing Lucky since she has a crush on him. Since one of the aims of the mission is to provide protection to Sanju, he tries getting close to her but she has only one thing on her mind, impressing Lucky. Sanju is constantly being irritated by Ram because of his attempts at friendship and she eventually complains to Lucky about him. Since he is the coolest guy on campus and Ram is the uncle type they don't get along at all. Lucky, being the mischievous guy he is, ends up in a competition of getting to the roof of the school and in a sudden turn of events ends up hanging from the roof. Ram saves him. This causes all barriers to collapse between them and they become best of friends. Automatically, Sanju also gets close to Ram. Soon thereafter, Ms. Sharma (Kirron Kher), Lucky's mother, advertises for a paying guest in their house in order to make ends meet and thus Maj. Ram ends up in their house. Sanju soon starts wearing new kinds of clothes after visiting Ms. Chandini (Sushmita Sen) the chemistry teacher, along with Ram.Soon, when Ram expresses his feelings to Ms. Chandini, she tells him she feels the same way but they can't be together because she was older than him. In addition, Lucky falls in love with Sanju because of her new look. Lucky and, Ms.Sharma find out that Ram is actually Shekar's son and kicks him out of their house when he is about explain. Ram discovers Raghavan has kidnapped Sanjana.Raghavan and Ram have a deadly fight. But, surprisingly Ram wins the fight even though he is wounded by a bullet shot inflicted by Raghavan. The story is set around the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Javed Khan (Shashi Kapoor) is a feckless feudal chieftain with a Muslim Pathan heritage, whose world revolves around breeding carrier pigeons. His younger brother-in-law, Sarfaraz Khan (Naseeruddin Shah) is politically awakened and actively plots the fight against the British. Freedom fighters attack the local British administrators while they are in Sunday Worship at Church, massacring them all. Miriam Labadoor, Jennifer Kendal) manages to escape with her daughter, Ruth (Nafisa Ali) and mother. The three women seek refuge with the wealthy Hindu family of Lala Ramjimal (Kulbhushan Kharbanda). Lala is torn between his loyalty for India and his privileged position under the British. However, matters are taken out of his hand by Javed Khan who barges into Lala's house and forcibly takes Ruth and her family to his own house. This leads to jealousy on part of his wife, Firdaus (Shabana Azmi) and anger on part of his brother, who ultimately gives in to the Pathan tradition of offering hospitality and sanctuary (Nanawatai) even to uninvited guests. Various situations ensue due to cultural misunderstandings in the domestic routine of the Muslim household with its new English guests. Javed falls in love with Ruth, and wants to marry her but is opposed bitterly by her mother. Noticing intense feelings of Javed for her daughter Ruth, Miriam Labadoor (mother) cleverly makes an agreement with Javed that she would only give her daughter’s hand to Javed if British were defeated. At first instance, Javed is hesitant but accepts the offer when again Miriam asks him if he has misgivings in his war against the British. The film of exploitation in rural Bihar, in which a landlord (Utpal Dutt)’s men wreck a village and kill the benevolent schoolmaster (Anil Chatterjee) who was a progressive force in the village. Dibyanath Chatterji, his bank-employed wife, Sujata, and youngest son, Brati, live an affluent existence in Calcutta, West Bengal, India, circa early 1970s. Sujata is a quiet, devout Hindu, religious, and compassionate woman, and Brati has finished his school and is now attending college. His parents are proud of him, and keep track of his progress. Then their world is shattered during the early hours, when they are informed by the police that Brati has been killed. Dibyanath and Sujata go to identify Brati's body, mourn, lament inconsolably. They know now that their lives will never be the same again - for by the police they will be called the mother and father of corpse No. 1084. Sujata struggles to understand Brati's passing, meets his friends one by one, comes to know that Brati had a girlfriend, Nandini Mitra, and that's when she finds out that Brati was part of a rebel group often referred to as "Naxalbari", a militant leftist group. As she delves deeper and deeper into Brati's former life, she begins to understand her son's struggle, and decides to continue to further this. What Sujata does not know is her and Dibyanath's lives are in danger, and they well turn up dead and end up as numbered corpses in a police morgue.
