Synopsis

While scrubbing the floor at home, Belle (Josette Day) is interrupted by her brother's friend Avenant (Jean Marais) who tells her she deserves better and suggests they get married. Dans leur petit appartement, les époux Josse vivent de façon terne et paisible. Charles Josse est au contentieux d'une compagnie d'assurance qui refuse d'assurer le fantasque Maurice. Charles Josse prend Maurice en affection et règle son problème tout en l'invitant régulièrement à passer des soirées à son domicile. Maurice en profite pour séduire Fernande Josse et l'incite à supprimer son mari en versant du poison dans son thé. Charles, qui a surpris leur projet, ne fait rien pour stopper le complot et ingurgite la tasse de thé dans laquelle, finalement, Fernande n'a pas mis le poison. Pierre Losseray is a surgeon at the public hospital in a small provincial town. He has recently suffered a heart attack but has returned to work. He is appreciated by his patients, and is being hassled by Old Brézé, the owner of a nearby medical clinic, who is losing clients and cannot stand competition. In league with his sons and son-in-law, Brézé uses insinuations close to blackmail. Losseray also learns about the story of Doctor Jean-Pierre Berg, another surgeon with a very different lifestyle from Losseray, who was similarly hassled by the same man fifteen years before. He becomes obsessed with it as he discovers what it was about.

Marc Kelber, marchand de tableaux, achète un Gauguin, deux millions.
