Au début des années 1880, un escroc fait valider un faux document, censé dater de l'occupation espagnole, qui lui donne des droits sur plus de 5 millions d'hectares. Il s'y conduit comme un vrai dictateur en faisant payer des loyers exorbitants aux ranchers, et en expulsant ceux qui ne peuvent pas payer. Parmi ces derniers, on retrouve Stony Brooke, Tucson Smith et Lullaby Joslin. Ils font appel auprès du Président Garfield, mais lorsque celui-ci leur répond que la cour a validé le document, ils décident de devenir les "Night Riders" et d'attaquer les sbires de l'usurpateur pour rendre l'argent aux ranchers spoliés.

The Cattlemen's Association has called in the Mesquiteers to find cattle rustlers. They get Tex Riley to pose as Stony so Stony can arrive posing as a wanted outlaw. This gets Stony into the gang of rustlers and he alerts Tucson and Lullaby as to the next raid. But Hartley is on hand and unknown to anyone is the rustler's boss and he joins the posse with a plan that will do away with the Mesquiteers.
