It is about an eccentric, unsociable young man who is forced by his mother to make some friends before she'll return his stereo to him. He is joined on a trip through a desert by a pyramid scheme salesman, to assist in finding a location to bury a frozen cat.
Crispin Glover appeared on Late Night with David Letterman in 1987 appearing in-character as Rubin Farr. This caused much confusion to David Letterman as he, after almost being kicked in the face by Glover, walked off his own set while still on the air. It has never been confirmed by Glover whether or not this was a performance.

After rescuing U.S. Marshal Ray Carter (Robert Patrick) in Mongolia, the Angels, Dylan (Drew Barrymore), Natalie (Cameron Diaz), and Alex (Lucy Liu) are hired to locate a set of titanium rings called H.A.L.O. (Hidden Alias List Operation) stolen from the Department of Justice that, when put together in a machine, will display a list of all individuals in the witness protection program. Many people, including Justice Department official William Rose Bailey (Bruce Willis), who possessed one of the rings, were murdered in the process. Having discovered that one of the protected witnesses, Alan Caulfield (Eric Bogosian), was murdered in his house in San Bernardino, the Angels investigate the scene and discover evidence suggesting that Caulfield was smothered with a bag and the killer is a surfer with a scar on his left leg. Meanwhile, Natalie and her now boyfriend Peter Kominsky (Luke Wilson) are moving in together, with some help from Alex's boyfriend Jason Gibbons (Matt LeBlanc), whose relationship with Alex is on a "time out".

Frank Detorre (Bill Murray) is a widowed slovenly zookeeper at the Sucat Memorial Zoo in Rhode Island. Much to the frustration of his young daughter, Shane (Elena Franklin), he eats compulsively unhealthy and has minimal concern for germs or disease. While trying to eat a hard-boiled egg with mayonnaise and salt, it is stolen from him by a chimpanzee. He gets it back, but not before it falls into the filth of the chimp's habitat. When Shane is disgusted by him about to eat it he uses the "ten second rule" as a justification for the unsanitary act.

Lorna Cole (Rene Russo) is pregnant with LAPD sergeant Martin Riggs' baby; they are not married, but both are thinking about it. Kevin (Kieran Culkin) is a 13-year-old boy who suffers Mucopolysaccharidosis IV (or Morquio syndrome) and lives with his mother Gwen (Sharon Stone). He is extremely intelligent and prone to flights of fancy, but is physically crippled and is forced to walk with crutches and a brace. A spunky piglet named Gordy lives a happy life on Meadow Brook Farm somewhere near Hope, Arkansas. Unfortunately, the farm's farmer has gone bankrupt, and thus must sell everything, starting with Gordy's family. Two men arrive in a truck to take Gordy's father, but Gordy is alerted of this by the farm's rooster. Gordy tries to stop his father from leaving by following the truck taking his father, but his father tells him to go home and look after the family. When Gordy returns he finds that his mother and siblings were taken in another truck while he pursued his father. Determined to locate his family and return to the farm, Gordy sets out alone to find them. He eventually ends up in the care of Jinnie Sue MacAllister, a young country singer who lives in a camper van with her also country singer father, Luke, and their "manager", Cousin Jake. Jinnie Sue, not knowing Gordy's name, calls him Pinky.

T.J.Burke quits his job in Detroit and convinces his friend Dexter Rutecki to move to Aspen. After succeeding in tryouts, they both become ski instructors. While T.J. advances to the most popular instructor of the school during the season, he has to take care for Dexter, whose future is less bright and eventually thinking about being a drug courier - which tests their friendship. T.J. and Dexter decide to ski out of bounds in order to train for the upcoming Powder-8 competition. While skiing outside the boundaries of Aspen, T.J. and Dexter set off an avalanche. Dexter suffers a tragic demise, while T.J. escapes with minor injuries. Meanwhile the rich business woman Bryce supports T.J. in his writing ambitions and invites him to live at her home. A gang is attempting to steal computers from an 18 wheeler. One of the gang members remotely hacks a set of traffic lights, turning them to red, while other members of the gang rig chains to the back of the truck. They turn the light green again, and as the truck pulls away, the chains tear the door open. When the trucker goes to the rear of his truck to investigate, he is knocked unconscious by a gang member, who then whistles for his cohorts to steal the load. Meanwhile, New York police officers Billy Wong (Jackie Chan) and Michael Alexander (Patrick James Clarke) are patrolling the neighborhood. On the radio, a dispatcher says that a truck was stripped by their premises, so the cops check it out. As the trucker comes to, he sees that his cargo has been stolen. Michael radios in the crime, while Billy passes the driver his hat, saying, "Welcome to New York".
