Synopsis
After his girlfriend dumps him, Sebastian, a cynical and bitter Asian-American vlogger, meets his cousin Naoto, a Japanese tourist. Naoto has come to America to follow his ex-girlfriend, who left him without any explanation. Seeking answers for their respective relationship issues, the two embark on a road trip that results in culture clash between the two cousins and wider American culture.Actors

In 1975, an obscure rock band called Gekirin record a song called "Fish Story" that anticipates the sound of punk rock that's just beginning in New York and London. The band breaks up shortly after "Fish Story" is released due to record company interference, but the song has an ongoing life over the years. The film jumps between decades as the recording plays a role in several seemingly unrelated scenarios: a member of the hospitality staff on a ferry (Mirai Moriyama) wins the heart of a beautiful girl while battling hijackers; Masaru (Gaku Hamada) and his buddies look for women on a lonely and boring evening; a comet heads towards Earth while a strange man in a record store lectures those around him about the impending destruction of the Earth; and how Gekirin came to write the song.

Recently graduated from high school, 17-year-old Shiro (Yagira Yuya) decides to put off college and work at a gas station instead. Shy and introspective, Shiro understands he is at a turning point of his life, but is unsure of what lies ahead. Though his parents disapprove of his decision, he has the support of his flower child grandmother (Natsuki Mari) who declares that a gas station is a romantic place for life's drifters. Starting in 1981, the film follows the life of Satoru Watarai (Hamada) from 12 to 30 years old. After dropping out of Junior High School, Watarai has resolved never to set foot outside his danchi (Japanese apartment complex). As he watches his classmates gradually move away, he begins a daily routine of exercise, martial arts and security patrols which he believes will protect the danchi and preserve its way of life. The film also explores Watarai's struggle to build relationships, make a living and deal with the dilapidation of the complex in the wake of the collapse of Japan's bubble economy.
