Salute (1929) is a motion picture directed by John Ford, starring George O’Brien, Helen Chandler, William Janney, Stepin Fetchit, and Frank Albertson about the football rivalry of the Army–Navy Game, and of two brothers, played by O'Brien and Janney, one of West Point, the other of Annapolis. John Wayne had an uncredited role in the film, as one of three midshipmen who perform a mild hazing.

The film was partly filmed on location at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

George D'Arcy et Tim Ryan, chefs de gangs rivaux, se retrouvent à travailler à la machinerie d'un bâtiment de l'US Navy pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Pour un temps, leur rivalité à propos de politique, mais aussi à propos de Rose, une jeune femme, est mise en sommeil par la discipline à bord, mais l'aumônier du bord, le père Joe, décide finalement de les faire se rencontrer sur un ring. Le combat est interrompu par un attaque de sous-marin, mais l'attaque est repoussée. Après la guerre, leur dispute continue jusqu'à ce que des trafiquants de drogue tuent un des frères de George et un ami de Tim. Ensemble, George et Tim attaquent le repaire des trafiquants et font exploser leur sous-marin. Plus tard, sous les auspices du père Joe, un combat est organisé entre eux et George en sort vainqueur.

In 1882 (in reality, the Gunfight at the O.K. Several town locals, including the Catholic priest, Father Lonergan (Ward Bond), conspire to trick him into believing that the wealthy Widow Tillane (Mildred Natwick) wants to marry him, but only if Mary Kate is no longer living in his house. After learning the truth on Sean and Mary Kate's wedding day, an enraged Will refuses to give his sister her dowry which is made up of a large sum of money and her family possessions passed down from her mother.
