Synopsis

Thiru (Sarath Kumar) and Surya (Suresh Gopi) are inseparable friends. They are so close to each other that Thiru selects a bride for Surya and Surya for Thiru. Their friendship is carried over from their grandfathers and fathers who were thick friends. Thiru brings up Surya's daughter, because Thiru has no children. Shankara (Ashish Vidyarthi) wants to separate them and does all that he could to separate them.

Muthukaalai (Murali), an angry young man, returns to his village after studying in the city. Ambalam (R. P. Viswam) is a respected panchayat headman, since his brother got married with another caste woman, he hates their family. Poochandu (Saradha Preetha), Ambalam's niece, falls in love with Muthukaalai. In the meantime, Muthukaalai's cousin Marikolunthu (Revathi) who is crazy about Muthukaalai comes from her village to marry him. One day, the storm devastates the entire village, destroying the poor villagers' house. The villagers begg Ambalam to let them in the temple until the storm calms down but Ambalam refuses point blank. Poochandu's mother breaks the temple's padlock to save the villagers. The next day, at the village panchayat, Ambalam condemn Poochandu's mother to tonsure and Poochandu to become a Devadasi. In anger against this dictatorship, Muthukaalai ridicules Ambalam and he get married with Poochandu. What transpires next forms the rest of the story.

Raasaiyya (Prabhu), a young man, wants to get married as soon as possible and he compels his uncle (Goundamani). His cousin Pechiamma (Kanaka) is an immature tomboy. After seeing her friend Valli (Mounica) dying during her delivery, Pechiamma thinks after the marriage, she will die. Raasaiyya finally gets married with Pechiamma. Thereafter, Pechiamma avoids Raasaiyya although he treasures her. One day, Raasaiyya comes drunk in his house and rapes Peciamma. She became pregnant. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

Ajith Kumar (as Jeeva), who lives with his grandmother in Madurai, says he would marry the girl he likes at first sight. He goes to Chennai after getting a job as a bank manager there. When she tries to escape from her escort, they pursue her. They cross paths with the troublesome Prabhu, who battles them. In the ensuing fight, Prabhu says 'I love you' to Swetha and she is so impressed by his gallantry, she falls in love.
