Sangeet Samrat Tansen (King of Music- Tansen) is a 1962 Hindi biopic historical drama film directed by S. N. Tripathi. Produced by Sur Singar Chitra it had lyrics by Shailendra and Swami Haridas with music by S. N. Tripathi. One of the popular songs from this film was "Jhoomti Chali Hawaa" in Raga Sohni, sung by Mukesh for Bharat Bhushan.The film starred Bharat Bhushan, Anita Guha, Sabita Chatterjee, David, Sapru and Mukri.
The story is a biopic of the famous court singer musician, Mian Tansen, one of the Navaratnas in Emperor Akbar’s court.
Synopsis
Tansen called Ramtanu or Tanu is born dumb but a miracle in the temple at the age five, gives the boy the ability to speak and sing. His voice attracts the sage musician Swami Haridas of Brindaban. He trains the boy in the Dhrupad style. Swami Haridas gets Tanu to study under Muhammad Ghaus where he lives with his childhood mate Hansa. Several years pass and Ghaus asks Tanu to shift to the court of Raja Ramchandra. This disappoints Tanu as he has plans to marry Hansa. However he ventures forth to the palace where his voice is applauded and he is awarded the title of Sangeet Shiromani Tansen. His singing reputation reaches Emperor Akbar who invites him to join his court singers. There he becomes one of the nine jewels of the Emperor’s exceptionally talented men. The story then follows misunderstandings with his beloved Hansa, his singing prowess and finally his getting united once again with Hansa.Actors

Sunil Mehra (played by Manoj Kumar) completes his medical studies and becomes a doctor. He is kidnapped by dacoits in Himalayas and harassed and left badly hurt. Phoolwa, a village girl (played by Mala Sinha) find him in his poor state and then takes care of his till he becomes fit. He then leaves for his home in the city. But he decides to go back to Himalayas and help poor people who don't have proper facilities and no good medical care. Villagers resist his arrival as they don't trust his modern medicines but believe only in local healers. Worried for him, Sunil's family sends his fiancée Neeta (played by Shashikala) to get him back. Sunil in turn asks Neeta, who also is a doctor, to stay there with him. Firm on his decision, he stays. He also falls in love with Phoolwa.

Asha (Mala Sinha) is in court facing a murder trial. Puran (Bharat Bhushan), a lawyer and journalist, takes the case. The story then goes into flashback, showing Asha working in the rationing office just after the war. She comes from a poor family and is the sole earning member. She also has six younger sisters to take care of. Puran comes from a rich family; his father is Seth Mulchand, a business man. However, Puran decides to work for a newspaper, as a reporter. Asha likes Puran's articles exposing corruption and black-marketing, and his articles on working women. She gets interested in meeting the writer. The two meet in her office at her place of work. While leaving, Puran manages to drop his papers, and they get jumbled up with the papers on Asha's desk. Her paycheck, which was lying on the desk, is picked up by Puran by mistake along with his own papers. She meets Puran again to get her check back.

The film opens in Dev Lok or "the world of the gods," a Hindu heaven located above the clouds, where we witness the "birth" of Santoshi Ma as the daughter of Ganesha, the elephant headed god of good beginnings, and his two wives Riddhi and Siddhi ("prosperity" and "success"). A key role is played by the immortal sage Narada, a devotee of Vishnu, and a cosmic busybody who regularly intervenes to advance the film's two parallel plots, which concern both human beings and gods. We soon meet the maiden Satyavati (Kanan Kaushal), Santoshi Ma's greatest earthly devotee, leading a group of women in an aarti (song and ceremony of worship) to the goddess. This first song, "Main To Arti Utaru", "I perform Mother Santoshi's arti," exemplifies through its camerawork the experience of darshan —of "seeing" and being seen by a deity in the reciprocal act of "visual communion" that is central to Hindu worship.

Seema is the only child of widowed Mohan, who is adopted by Mohan's boss, Sardar Ranjit Singh, who has no heir to his estate, as his daughter, Jamuna, eloped with a poor peasant, Gopal. Ranjit does not get along with his step-brother, Shankar. Jamuna manages to placate her dad, & he goes to her house, only to find it in flames with Gopal burned to death, and their son, Sunder, missing. Years later, Seema has now grown up and meets with a young man named Pyarelal in Ooty. She meets him a year later, but this time he introduces himself as Jhatpat Singh, a man she was supposedly engaged to in their childhood. Shortly thereafter she meets with the real Jhatpat Singh, and changes her mind about the fake Jhatpat Singh alias Pyarelal. Now Sunil knows that he was adopted and understands that he was the lost son of Gopal. He goes to Sardar Ranjit Singh and appoints to be an estate manager. There he meets Seema again and they rekindle their romance. By that time, planning to steal away property, Shankar sends his son as the lost son of Jamuna and Gopal. Ranjit Singh believes him and wants to marry seema to Shankar's son. After some misunderstandings, family finally reunites and Jamuna's sanity returns. Movie ends with the marriage of Seema and Sunil/Sunder.
