Santa Barbara (Hangul: 산타바바라) is a 2014 South Korean romance film starring Lee Sang-yoon and Yoon Jin-seo. It was written and directed by David Cho (also known as Cho Sung-kyu).

Synopsis

Jung-woo is a naïve music director of film and commercials, and works part-time at a music institute run by his friend. Until one day, his friend flees from his debts and workload, leaving Jung-woo to face the angry creditors, one of whom takes Jung-woo's precious guitar. While having a drink with director Kim, one of the creditors, Jung-woo meets Soo-kyung, whose sister is involved in the director's project. Soo-kyung is a promising creative director at an advertising agency, and Jung-woo's brief encounter with her leaves a good impression on him. When Jung-woo takes a job working on commercial music to buy back his guitar, the two run into each other. As they begin to spend time together at work and after-hours drinks, the more Jung-woo and Soo-kyung learn about each other. Aside from feeling attraction towards each other, they realize that they have several things in common, like coming from an atypical family and dreams of going on a winery tour. However, their relationship is put to the test when Jung-woo doesn't show up on the day of Soo-kyung's presentation because he was caught in heavy traffic. Soo-kyung misunderstands, calling him irresponsible, and the two break up. But not long after, they get a chance to work together on a project in Santa Barbara, California, which happens to be the location of their dream winery tour.

Choi Hyeon is a Northeast Asian Studies professor at Peking University who returns to his homeland Korea after a long absence to attend the funeral of an old friend. While talking over drinks, Hyeon is suddenly reminded of an erotic painting (called chunhwa) which he and his deceased friend had seen in a traditional tea shop in Gyeongju, during a trip seven years ago to that famed historical city in North Gyeongsang Province which was the ancient capital of the Silla Dynasty. The next day Hyeon makes an impulsive decision to head to Gyeongju. Full of expectation, he searches the Arisol café (Arisol means "beautiful green pine tree") only to find that the painting is no longer there, but he meets the café's beautiful and mysterious new owner Gong Yoon-hee. Hyeon spends the next 24 hours wandering around the city and tracing back his memories, and he experiences a series of unexpected, yet enjoyable encounters during his aimless journey.

Lee Jeok-yo (Park Hae-il) is a highly respected national poet in his 70s. His thirtysomething assistant Seo Ji-woo (Kim Mu-yeol) has recently published his first book, described as a genre novel with psychological insight, and it has shot to the top of the bestseller lists. Only later will it be clear how great his debt is to the poet laureate. On finding a young high school girl, Eun-gyo (Kim Go-eun), asleep on a chair on his porch, Jeok-yo is instantly enamored and rather than chastising her for breaking into his property, he subsequently agrees to give her a part-time job cleaning his home. As Jeok-yo spends more time in Eun-gyo's company, long-lost feelings are awakened within him, and her exuberance, lust for life, sense of fun and genuine warmth towards him quickly strip the years away in his mind: he increasingly sees himself as the young man he used to be—his love and need for her growing not only because he finds her incredibly beautiful but also as a direct result of how she makes him feel. Deeply smitten, Jeok-yo begins to write a short story about his imagined sexual relationship with the effervescent young woman. However, as the two get ever closer, Ji-woo finds it impossible to hold back from vocalizing his opposition to what he deems to be an inappropriate and wholly repugnant relationship and, on finding Jeok-yo's manuscript, his abhorrence (and jealousy of both Jeok-yo and Eun-gyo's relationship and the beauty of Jeok-yo's writing) boils over and he decides to steal the short story to publish under his own name.

Han-na is an overweight phone sex part-timer and a ghost singer for Ammy, a famous pop singer who actually lip syncs. Instead of being famous for her own amazing vocal talent, Han-na sings behind backstage during Ammy's performance and Ammy takes all credits, and records all of Ammy's songs. Other then that, Han-na has a huge crush for Sang-jun who's a director and his arrogant father owns the entertainment company. One day, Ammy purposely insults her in front of Sang-jun during his birthday party, knowing well that Han-na likes him. While crying in the bathroom, Han-na overhears Sang-jun telling Ammy that even though they are just using Han-na for her voice, they must be kind to her so she will not walk out on them. Heartbroken, Han-na attempts suicide with a gas leak but is interrupted by a phone call from one of her phone sex regulars who happens to be a top plastic surgeon. She tries to blackmail him with recorded tapes and later honestly tampers them to convince him about the pain she's holding in her heart about being fat. The surgeon refuses to operate further on Han-na, but Han-na threatens to inform his wife about his secret fascination. Then, Han-na makes a moving speech that she does not want to undergo surgery merely to be beautiful, but for the sake of love and as a vote of confidence so that she can live a happy life, and the surgeon is deeply moved in the end. Han-na puts herself in seclusion for a year as she recovers from the changes.
