Saraswatichandra is a black-and-white Hindi film released in 1968 . It starred Nutan and Manish among others and was directed by Govind Saraiya.

The film was adapted into a modern-day TV series of the same name, Saraswatichandra by Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and currently airs on Star Plus.

The film was based on Saraswatichandra, a Gujarati novel, by Govardhanram Madhavram Tripathi, set in 19th-century feudalism in India. It also won the National Film Awards in the Best Cinematography and Best Music Director categories.

Synopsis

The original novel, written in five parts from 1887 to 1902, narrates the lifestyle and ideology of people in the early 20th century. It depicts the social fabric of that time: extended family life and the beginning of the meltdown of old customs and traditions.
