Leila, danseuse des "Las Vegas Girls", un club de Londres, a rendez-vous dans un hôtel avec Mr. Jefferson, son amant, pour un nouveau contrat. Jefferson est tué sous les yeux de Leila par un lanceur de couteaux masqué. Horrifiée, elle reste dans l'hôtel. L'inspecteur Perkins et Sir Arthur de Scotland Yard trouvent dans la poche du pyjama de l'assassiné un œil de verre. Le portier de l'hôtel rapporte qu'un peu avant Jefferson a reçu des queues de billard. Perkins et son assistant, le sergent Pepper, découvrent que Jefferson était impliqué dans un trafic de femmes international. Peu avant la prochaine répétition au théâtre de l'Odéon, Leila est victime d'un empoisonnement. Dans les coulisses, ils soupçonnent de nombreuses personnes comme Eric le ventriloque ou Rubiro le lanceur de couteaux, à qui il en manque un. Par ailleurs, la danseuse Yvonne Duval, qui est amoureuse de Bruce Sharringham, fait son apparition. Lady Sharringham, sa mère, s'oppose au mariage de son fils avec une danseuse. Yvonne a du mal à le croire, car il obéit à sa mère et il est héroïnomane.

1969. In a Vienna bookshop the Argentine chemist Rafaelo Aranda is poisoned by the bookseller Valerie Steinfeld. The bookseller commits suicide immediately afterwards. It seems the bookseller has never met him before. The chemist's son, Manuel Aranda, wants to find out the background of this murder. He finds out that his father has developed chemical weapons of mass destruction and offered to sell them to the United States, the Soviet Union and France. The Secret Services of these countries try to prevent Aranda from publishing these facts. Aranda survives a first sniper attack without even noticing it.

LouAnne (Michelle Pfeiffer), a discharged U.S. Marine, applies for a teaching job in High School, and is surprised and pleased to be offered the position with immediate effect. Showing up the next day to begin teaching, however, she finds herself confronted with a classroom of tough, sullen teenagers, all from lower-class and underprivileged backgrounds, involved in gang warfare and drug pushing, flatly refusing to engage with anything. They immediately coin the nickname "White Bread" for LouAnne, due to her race and apparent lack of authority, to which LouAnne responds by returning the next day in a leather jacket and teaching them karate. The students show some interest in such activities, but immediately revert to their former behavior when LouAnne tries to teach the curriculum.
