Synopsis

Pandian (Pandiarajan), a sale representative, gets married with Rajeswari (Ranjitha). Pandian's mother Vadivu (Vadivukkarasi) is a miser while his father Velmurugan (Manivannan) is a good man and they also have three daughters. Vadivu takes advantage of Rajeswari's salary and dowry. For the marriage of her first daughter Malini (Latha), Vadivu uses Rajeswari's jewels. Then, the groom (Thyagu) losses his job, so Pandian and Rajeswari decide to abortion for the benefit of the family. In the meantime, Malini becomes pregnant. Rajeswari resigns her job whereas Vadivu expected a lot on Rajeswari's salary. One day, Vadivu immolates Rajeswari but Velmurugan saves her at time. Rajeswari leaves Pandian's house and begins to look for a job. Despite the fact that she looks for job everywhere, she didn't find. So she becomes a dressmaker and after that, she becomes the entrepreneur of a clothes factory. Meanwhile, Pandian's family are crippled with debts. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

Thiruppaachi and Sengulam are neighboring villages with a history of enmity between them. Maayan (Manoj) and Machakanni (Riya Sen) meet on the day of her engagement and its love at first sight. Her marriage itself gets called off when the groom and his family insult Machakanni's family and her romance with Maayan continues. But when her brother finds out about him, all hell breaks loose. Amavasai (Sathyaraj),homeless but egoistic, gets acquainted to politician Manimaran, then MLA of palladam constituency, near tirupur (Manivannan). Amavasai helps Mani with some petty tasks during election campaign and meetings. Amavasai grows into a well acclaimed helper and first associate for Mani. Meanwhile Amavasai falls in love with thayamma(Kasthuri) and one day gives her some drug making her groggy and then deflowers her. Mani instructs Amavasai to stand for MLA election as independent candidate in the coming general election with his support as mani was not given his party ticket. Amavasai wins by huge margin and becomes the MLA. He forgets his relationship with Kasthuri and rejects her pregnancy and child. Kasthuri and her parents move out of that village to avoid humiliation. Soon kasthuri gives birth to a boy and dies. Amavasai forgets Mani's help and forces him in role under him. He changes his name to Nagaraja Cholan for gaining social status. He marries the only daughter of the rich local landlord, Sivakami (Sujatha) and even cheats him of his Palace. Over years Amavasai grows into highly influential and corrupt politician with high criminal affluence. He builds a strong political empire through shortcuts. His ego and pride to remain in power make him kill many. He wins and remains as MLA of palladam in all the general elections for next 20 years.

The story focuses on Television Journalist Pughazhendhi (Arjun) working for "Q TV". During riots triggered by a fight between some college students and bus drivers, which threaten to touch upon the touchy issue of castes, the CM of the state Raghuvaran reveals his unwillingness to take strong action to quell the violence for fear of estranging any of his political bases. To set things right, he then appears on a live interview with Pughazhendi, who had coincidentally captured the CM's earlier unwillingness to take a stand, on camera.

Rangan (Nasser) is a very ugly man and therefore lives a tough life. He is kicked out of jobs, ill-treated constantly, and the girl he loves hates him. (Think "The Elephant Man.") Then one day, Rangan goes to the house of his make-up artist friend (Manivannan) and finds a strange mask that he picks up and wears. The mask adheres to his face, and Rangan becomes very handsome. Nearing the end, Rangan takes off the Mask for a moment, and wishes people would respect him for who he is on the inside. His wife walks in, sees his ugly face, and throws him out, mistaking him for a robber. Rangan's former followers throw him to the side. Deciding that only beauty can bring him respect, Rangan puts the mask back on.
