Synopsis
Indra Devi (Kushboo), the sister of Ishwarya (Monicka), is very rich and arrogant. Priya (Rambha) is her personal assistant. Kasi (Vijay) is the son of Mani (Mannivannan) and has fallen in love with Monicka in Germany. After hearing the story Indra Devi, Kasi comes to India with all his family. Meanwhile, Indra Devi is challenged by Vedhachalam (Mansur Ali Khan) who has also sent his son (Karan) to study in Germany. Karan also falls in love with Ishwarya. Kasi serves as a body guard for Kushboo, his brother works as a servant boy and Manivannan and his daughter serve as cooks for the Indra Devi 's family. Priya (Ramba) falls in love with Kasi but later gives it to Ishwarya after knowing the truth of Kasi coming to India.Actors

Naattamai (Sarathkumar) is a very kind-hearted, disciplined man. He sits on the ancestral throne in his village to do justice (similar to panchayat). He hears all the cases and gives solutions and punishments to the wrong-doers. His wife, Khushboo admires and respects him a lot. His brothers Pasupathi (sarathkumar) and Raja Ravindra fear for him and also have a lot of respect for him as he has brought them up as his children. The young Sarathkumar marries Meena, daughter of an industrialist. She at first never liked Naatamai and her husband for being so timid before his brother but later transforms after knowing his greatness from her father.Raja Ravindra loves his paternal cousin(Ponnambalam)'s daughter (Sanghavi). In the flashback, Periya Naatamai(Vijayakumar) father of naatamai orders Ponnambalam to marry his servant's daughter whom he raped, though he is his sister's son. His brother-in-law shoots at him as he is disappointed by his verdict.Enraged Periya Naatamai gives his final verdict before dying to abandon their family and whoever visits his house will receive the same punishment and also not to share even a glass of water with them. Ponnambalam from then builds envy on his uncle's family and waits for an opportunity to take revenge on them. He plans to bring a lady (Subhashri) as a teacher to the school in the village and tells her to make young Sarathkumar fall for her. She does so to save her father who is in the hands of Ponnambalam. He kills her and makes the villagers believe that Sarathkumar has done this. Naatamai sentences 10 years of exile for his brother's family. Now Ponnambalam comes to know of his daughter's love and tries to kill Raja Ravindra with the help of his goons. Sarathkumar goes in rescue of him and pregnant Meena goes to Naatamai to convey this message. Manorama rushes to Nattamai and reveals the truth and tells that he punished his brother without committing any mistake. Naatamai takes revenge on Ponnambalam and dies on knowing that he gave a wrong verdict. Now younger Sarathkumar is shown taking the ancestral throne from his brother.

The film starts in a courtroom where a Brahmin woman Janaki (Meena) is fighting for divorce from her husband Pandian (Kamal Haasan). She offers various reasons for wanting a divorce. She has married Pandian against the wishes of her rich father Vishwanathan Iyer (Gemini Ganesan). But she isn't able to come to terms with living in Pandian's small house without amenities. Pandian is an assistant dance director with a modest income and is not able to spend much time with the family. All this accumulates and Janaki decides to apply for divorce, which is granted. The court orders that Pandian can meet his daughter Barathi, once a week and this is his only solace. His daughter, however, loves him a lot and doesn't like the arrangement.

Natarajan (Delhi Ganesh) is a Brahmin house-owner near the Parthasarathy Temple looking for a right tenant for the upper portion of his house. He is very protective of his college going beautiful daughter Gayathri (Kanika). Since he often fears that the prospective tenant might romance with his daughter he filters all the people who come asking for the house. He rents out the house to five bachelor students who pretend to be good.They start showing their character soon by taking away roofs and watching her. On the advice of ‘Auto’ (Vivek), Natarajan brings Subramani (Madhavan) who charades himself as ‘Bottle Mani’, a dreaded thug to vacate the students. Incidentally Mani, who stays with his Jailor uncle (R. Sundarrajan), was thrown out of his house as he refuses to marry his daughter. Taking advantage of the situation, Mani befriends the five boys and starts staying with them.

Padayappa is an engineer who returns to his village from Chennai to attend his sister's wedding. His sister is engaged to their maternal uncle's son Suryaprakash. Thenali Soman (Kamal Hassan) is a man who fears anything and everything. Dr. Panchabhootham (Delhi Ganesh) and his assistant (Ramesh Khanna), who are the doctors treating Thenali, are jealous of a relatively junior doctor Dr. Kailash (Jayaram) getting all the media attention.
