Synopsis

The beginning is promising, at any rate, as you watch a Don't-Care Murugesan (Bharath) limp sorrowfully from the Central Jail, Palayamkottai, in a scruffy beard and glasses.

The story opens with a couple with twins sitting in a train. However, a thief snatches one of the sons, and after stealing the jewellery of the son, leaves the baby. However, the baby is found by a childless couple in a village. The couple hail from a large and powerful family, and they raise him as their son without telling him the truth. Thus, the twins grow up in different environment. The one living with the parents (Vasudevan a.k.a. Vasu) grows up in Chennai to become an officer in a private investigative agency. The other son, Vetrivel a.k.a. Vel grows up in Dindukkal and becomes a rustic young man.

Aarumugam, nicknamed Aaru (Surya Sivakumar), is a thug and dealmaker with a band of boys handpicked from the slums of Chennai. Thamizh (Prashanth) leads a happy life with his mother (Manorama) and sister-in-law (Urvasi). His brother(Livingston) is working in Kuwait and Thamizh too dreams of joining him there. Arul (Vikram), who works in a mill, is the third son of four brothers in a family of goldsmiths. Once, Arul's brother steals a chain due to financial circumstances. As Arul had taken the blame for it, he was labelled as a "thief" and seen as a black sheep by his father. Thus, he vows never to make a gold ornament ever again, takes up a job and pays for his expenses. Kanmani (Jyothika), who moves into the opposite house, begins by playing tricks on him, but eventually falls for his character. Arul doesn't believe in love, and keeps his distance from her. One day, when Arul's father scolds him in the temple, Kanmani stands up for him. Arul's father insults her by telling her "Arul's siblings are keeping quiet. Why are you making noise as though you have slept with him?" In a fit of anger, Arul marries Kanmani. Arul then realizes his love for her. The setting up of the party office of the ruling party forces Arul to lock horns with Gajapathy (Pasupathy), the local MLA, and his brother Sethupathy (Kollam Thulasi), the party leader. How Arul defeats the bad guy forms the rest of the story.

Unending caste discrimination surrounds Puliangulam and Vepangulam villages to such an extent that small incidents lead to shedding of blood to very large extents. Under such circumstances, Sakthivel (Simbu), son of Puliangulam Periyasamy (Raj Kiran), falls in love with Angel Devi (Sonia Agarwal), daughter of Vepangulam Soosai (Nazar). As Soosai comes to know of the issue and that his daughter is also in love with Sakthivel, he opposes the affair and decides to send Angel to a convent to become a Nun. Unable to disobey her father’s words, Angel decides to let go her love and become a nun. She does not change her mind, even after everyone comes to know the truth that she is not Soosai’s real daughter. Just as arrangements are made for the final procedures for her to become a nun, there comes an opposition following which the story tells whether the two lovers unite.

As Sivakkozhundhu was transferred to Coimbatore district to capture Anna Thandavam, the latter had planned to kill him. Anna Thandavam also plans to illegally grab land sold to a village temple by Vasu's late father. These two incidents cause enmity between Vasu and Anna Thandavam.

Aarusaamy (Vikram) is the Deputy Commissioner of Police of Tirunelveli who efficiently brings the city under control.
