The movie begins with two college students in a bar, talking about a thesis statement for an upcoming paper. One of them makes an argument that America is unique in that it has no real mythological character for granting wishes, such as a genie or leprechaun. The two men are soon joined in conversation by an old man at the bar claiming that America does, named O.W. Grant; the son of a leprechaun and a Cheyenne Indian., 1h48

In 2010, three friends are miserable with their lives: Adam Yates (John Cusack) has been dumped by yet another girlfriend, and his geeky 20-year-old nephew Jacob (Clark Duke) lives in his basement, playing Second Life, with no idea who his father is. Lou Dorchen (Rob Corddry) is a party animal way past his prime. Nick Webber-Agnew (Craig Robinson) has a dead-end job at a dog spa and an unfaithful and controlling wife named Courtney (Kellee Stewart). Lou almost dies from carbon monoxide poisoning in what his friends think is a suicide attempt. Adam and Nick sympathetically take him and Jacob to the site of some of their most memorable weekends, the Kodiak Valley Ski Resort. Upon arrival at the resort, they see that Kodiak Valley has fallen on hard times as well. They are shown to their room by a hostile one-armed bellhop named Phil Wedmaier (Crispin Glover). During a night of heavy drinking in a hot tub, they spill a can of an illegal Russian energy drink called "Chernobly" on the hot tub's controls. The next day, they wake up in 1986. They see each other as their normal age, but in their reflections and to other people, they appear as they did in 1986, except Jacob, who was not yet born. They arrive during "Winterfest '86," the weekend when Poison played to a huge crowd at the then-thriving Kodiak Resort., 1h41

Milly (Pamela Adlon) is a fourteen-year-old girl that has grown frustrated with her mother's attempts to curtail her tomboyish nature. Her mother Doris (Patty Duke) believes that Milly's actions are inappropriate for a girl and that she'd be better off showing more interest in dances and dresses. When her best friend's younger brother Malcolm (Seth Green) tells her about a witch's spell that will grant her deepest wish, Milly jumps at the chance. She visits the witch and manages to perform the spell properly, but believes that the spell failed. The next day Milly discovers that not only was the spell successful, but it has turned her into a hermaphrodite. She tells her family about what happened and to her surprise her father encourages her to explore her new masculinity. As a result Milly changes her name to "Willy" and begins attending a new school as a transfer student. Milly initially takes well to her new persona and gender, but eventually becomes conflicted when she begins to realize that life isn't necessarily easier as a boy and that she has feelings for her friend Alfie (Eric Gurry), who is equally confused about his feelings for "Willy". By the film's end Milly decides to become female once more., 1h39

Aaron and Michelle have been trying to buy their own home and have children but have been unsuccessful.
