Add to a movie listSex & Philosophy (Original title: Sex O Phalsapheh) is a 2005 French-Iranian-Tajik film directed, written and produced by Mohsen Makhmalbaf. Starring Daler Nazarov, Mariam Gaibova, and Farzona Beknazarova, the film is set in Tajikistan. Sex & Philosophy premiered at the Montreal World Film Festival in September 2005. It saw a theatrical release in South Korea, Turkey, Italy, Singapore and Russia. Sex & Philosophy was Tajikistan's official selection for the 78th Academy Awards but it was disqualified because English subtitles were not added to the film in the time allowed by the Academy.
Synopsis
In the midst of a mid-life crisis Jan, a 40-year-old dancing teacher, decides to tell his four lovers about each other. He gathers them together to explain his actions, going into details about why he first started his affairs with each of them. He gives them each a watch and they leave. Later, he discovers that one of his lovers was also having an affair with three other men when she calls him to a similar meeting and begins explaining why she began an affair with each of them.Comments

Nasim, a poor Afghan refugee in Iran, gives a demonstration in his town's square where he rides his bicycle without stopping for seven days and seven nights, with the aim of raising money for life-saving surgery for his dying wife. In the end, even after seven days, he continues to pedal endlessly, too fatigued to hear his son's and the crowd's pleas to get off his bicycle. One scholar analyses the film as an allegory which parallels the exploitation that Afghan refugees suffer from in Iran and from which they are unable to escape.

First Narrative: Young Gozal whose husband is a taxi driver has an affair with a young blond shoeshine boy. One day an old man who can’t hear well is recording the bird’s songs when he hears what they say to each other. So he finds out about their affair and tells everything to Gozal’s black-haired husband. The black–haired kills the young blond boy and injures Gozal and then surrenders himself to the court. He is sentenced to death and is thrown into the sea as he chooses. Gozal commits suicide in her regular meeting place.

A well-known Iranian director, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, plans to make a film for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of cinema. He placed an advertisement in a newspaper in order to hire one hundred actors. He has prepared 1000 application forms, but 5000 people show up. The result is a riot in which the applicants are trampled on and wounded. Mohsen Makhmalbaf auditions dozens of men and women in front of the camera; their statements, which are by turns funny and touching, reveal the reality of life in Iran. Thus, the director enables us to see and understand those intellectuals, students and children and above all the women, who can not normally be heard or seen. It shows, once again, that cinema is of vital importance in countries such as Iran.

Khorshid lives with his mom in a house near a river somewhere in Tajikistan. The landlord comes around every morning to ask for the rent. Khorshid has to provide the money or else they'll have to leave. His blindness has given him an amazing skill in tuning musical instruments which gets him a job at an instrument making workshop.
